I'd be the last person to say that exercise is not necessary, but there are people out there - myself included - who just could not do the kind of exercise you're talking about. An hour work-out a day? It would be impossible for me. So, does that mean you condemn us never to be able to lose any weight, although we may urgently need to - and it's not just a question of a bikini on the beach or similar.

You've totally missed the point though. Eric said exercise is not necessary and not really beneficial unless it's proper hardcore (like in the biggest loser). I was merely pointing out that even 1hr per day would be enough and when I said 1000calories, I was trying to show that you don't need to be a workout freak to create a deficit.. I never said anywhere anything less than that is pointless. Truthfully, any little exercise helps, whether it's 20mins or 30mins or whatever, even walking. I mean I started out walking and there's various forums with people losing 200lbs+ just by walking.
I go to 50+ stretch-and-tone Mondays and Thursdays, 45 minutes. I also go to 50+ aqua-aerobics Tuesdays. That's it. Just about all I can manage.
And that's fab, but again I don't see anywhere where I've said anything against that.
DH is finding, since I've been doing the Dukan Diet, that he's eating a lot less carbs than formerly, and the spin-off from this is that he needs a lot less insulin and, would you believe it, he's losing weight? He can't do ANY exercise at all because of the knee problem. We are both encouraging each other, we've had a lot of negative comments along the lines of 'oh you can't lose weight at your age' but the fact remains, weight is gradually dropping off both of us, so we do NOT need any more discouragement just because we can't do work-outs. Believe me, if it were physically possible I'd be out there with people I know who run the Essex Bootcamps in the local woods, but a few minutes of one of their sessions would be enough to finish me off altogether.
Again I'm getting this vibe that I've somehow offended you and I'm sorry if I have, but please show me anywhere where I've said people who don't exercise wont lose weight. In fact I even stated that you can lose weight without exercise. I lost weight without exercise whilst on holiday. My parents and siblings lost weight due to stress, again lack of exercise. I'm sure there's a joe bloggs out there who has lost weight on a change of diet alone. But my point is: exercise is beneficial. It doesn't have to be biggest loser style where they workout hours and hours per day.

It's great that your husband is able to lose weight without any exercise at all, but not everyone is like that. Some people do actually need exercise or any physical activity in order to burn the fat.

Sorry if I offended you or anyone else. Didn't mean to.
  • Hey everyone,

I've been to the gym this morning and done a total of 3.5 miles on the bike/cross trainer/treadmill. I also did some weights and felt that I pushed myself a little harder today. Either that, or I had more energy :)

That will be it on the exercise front for the weekend, am travelling down to London tomorrow for my friend's wedding on the Saturday - returning home Sunday. I will aim to do my best eating/drinking wise, but sometimes you have to enjoy yourself!

Trying the eat less move more approach, I've certainly moved more in the past two days! And eaten less...

I've joined the gym before but mum started making excuses so I ended up not going coz I was too scared to go on my own. (I was 16 and had only been twice) I don't have the money to join a gym right now plus I hate to exercise in front of people. I'm gonna go on the Wii whenever I can for now and see what happens.

You know how smoothies aren't as good for you because the food is blended so the sugar is released into your system too quickly?

Does the same apply to veggie soups if you put them through the blender?

I don't fancy unblended cauliflower soup

yes to an extent, the more any food is processed the faster the body absorbs it, and in the case of sugary foods the more insulin the body will need to cope

however vegetables on the whole are very low GI so whilst they will be easier to absorb blended they will still be pretty low GI

soup is mostly water and has a very neat trick, when solids are blended with water the body actually treats the whole thing as a solid and takes a very long time to process, so although the gut will absorb the nutrients from soup more quickly the stomach will only release it into the gut slowly. Where as water (even drunk with food) is passed by the stomach into the gut very quickly, which is why water does not satiate appetite

Sorry, you keep saying weight loss is 90% diet and exercise is not necessary. I agree about the diet, well it's more 75-80% i'd say, but i don't agree about the exercise bit though. If you want to keep the weight off (essentially the fat as obviously you want to keep as much muscle as possible), then i'd say exercise is very important and not just about making you a 'happier healthier person', but also with the calorie deficit.

Yes you can lose weight without exercise, but how do you go about toning up without it? Or how do you keep it off without exercise? How do you build up muscle, because muscle sure as hell doesn't come from diet alone. Some people end up regretting not exercising often because they end up with a load of loose skin which i've read is hard to get rid of. And no you don't need to workout 7hrs a day or be hardcore for exercise to be beneficial. 1hr a day is fine as depending on what exercise you're doing, you could be burning upto 1000calories. :)

Not having a go or anything, but just don't see how anyone can say exercise is not necessary, when studies have shown that a combination of diet and exercise is best for weight loss. And i definately could not have lost 74lbs with diet alone.

It helps but it is not necessary, many people do loose weight with zero exercise, my OHs friend has lost 7 stone and kept it off for over a year with 0 exercise, there have been many studies that have shown that for the average person doing a sensible amount of exercise has almost no affect on there weight loss.

As a side note if you have no insulin in your blood it is impossible to store body fat regardless of how much you eat, I ate 8032 cals this sat and sun due to family commitments and gained 0 weight because 90% of it came from fat and protein and the rest was low GI carbs

Now don't get me wrong I am not anti exercise, I would recommend that if you can you do at least 2 30 min high intensity cardio sessions a week and 2 30 min heavy resistance sessions a week to get fit and tone and build muscle mass. This will help with weight loss and make you fitter and stronger and you will get a metabolic boost from the high intensity training whilst your body repairs. However for most people this is still only going to be a small amount of calories. For an average sized person working at a decent level you are going to do well to burn 300 cals in 30 mins, thats 900 cals a week or 3600 cals a month which is basically an single lb of fat, a nice bonus but its not going to lift you into biggest loser territory.

I would say it would be very difficult for a normal person to fit in 6 one hour exercise sessions a week, in fact I would say that much is bordering on OCD unless you are training to compete. In my early 20s I was an amateur body builder and I was training 6 days a week for an hour a day and I defiantly was suffering from OCD

I am anti extended endurance training such as marathon running as its completely unnatural for us to do, it risks wear on the joints but worst of all it causes an enlargement to the heart which increases the risk of atrial fibrillation and other heart issues later in life.

Exercise will do almost nothing for loose skin, loose skin is down to several factors:

your age, the older you get the less elastic your skin becomes and the less likely it will be to snap back

your natural skin elasticity, this changes quite drastically from person to person, one guy who was the size of the blimp (and blogged his weight loss) had his skin return to normal, but this is very rare

how big you got, the larger you get the more you skin will stretch and grow (skin is the largest living organ on the human body) and the less likely it will be to go back. Which is a real killer, as i had an over 80" stomach I have handfuls of loose skin and no way in hell of raising 40 grand to pay for its removal :( And for the record loose skin is very painful, it pinches and twists every time you move and wakes you up constantly hence I am up at 4am ...

So if you can do a couple of HI cardio and resistance sessions a week that's brilliant but if you cant (especially if you have an injury or disability such as arthritis) then it is not a barrier to weight loss, get the diet right and you will loose weight and keep it off.

    Hello all!!

Been a while just thought i'd pop in and see how you're all doing! My weight loss has been slow but I have managed to lose a few lbs since booking my wedding (been hanging around the wedding forum lately!)

Got about 5 months to lose at least a stone and thinking about getting back into SW to maybe kick start my weight loss. Only problem with that is I love oak crackers for lunch, low gi, low cals, really filling, but they are synned on SW!! :(

How's everyone getting on? eric, fred, victory, puds, vix, sary, efrieze, margaretclare, granny, BB, beanie...any of you guys still around? And anyone else from the gang I've not mentioned apologies, it's been a while!!

Very weird coincidence, was just watching this episode when I logged on!!!

I am still around, just immensely busy at work, and immensely busy in RL, still plodding along, still loosing slowly

Had large numbers of comments on my WL recently which helps, but i am in no rush to loose the last 30lbs, it will come off on its own :)
