Hey, I need to lose quite a bit of weight but I'm not sure if I can be motivated enough to do it. I start off really well then just kind of stop...I need a kick up the bum pretty much all the time.
At the moment I weigh over 18 stone and need to lose at least half a stone before my birthday in 6 weeks time. It doesn't help that I despise any form of exercise. Can you lot help me out?Savings £8,865.22 £/15,000 Aiming to save enough for a house deposit.0 -

I have been going to the gym for the last 3 months working with a personal trainer 2x a week. She is helping strengthen my core and improve my posture. The side effect of this is that I am getting a pretty good muscle definition all over. But I haven't done much else on the weight loss front except for going to they gym a further 0-3 times per week. No goals, plan nothing.
Anyways I have been watching 'I used to be fat' on Viva. So far I have seen three 18 year olds lose between 60 and 90 pounds each, over a summer. They work with a personal trainer every day. I find this programme inspiring and learn a lot of things that are helping me, especially on the mental/willpower side.
Enough so, that I have eventually set myself a weight loss target of 14kg by the end of October. This breaks down into 2kg per week which I think is doable.
I plan on continuing my PT sessions but increase my total gym attendances to 5-6 times per week. I also plan on going down a lower GI route as recommended by many on this thread.
Willow92: if you read this thread (and if you have time, the other Lose Weight threads) I think you will find a lot of motivation. One thing suggested by MargaretClare (I am fairly certain) is to write down all the reasons you want to lose the weight. Look at these every day, even when you know them by heart, to keep your motivation up.0 -
Willow92, here's what I think FWIW.
It has to start with a change of mindset i.e weight loss starts in your head. I too have watched a couple of the 'I used to be fat' programmes. One was an 18-year-old girl with a personal trainer and he had the patience of a saint with her, because as far as I could see, she had NO motivation of her own - in fact he said as much to her mother - because all the exercises he set her to do she whinged, cried, wailed, wept and moaned, and I thought to myself 'if you put as much energy into the exercises as you do protesting about it you'd be half-way there!' Her motivation was about clothes, fashions and wanting to look attractive before starting college. Nevertheless she did actually lose the weight!
The other I saw, a young man who wanted to go to cookery school, was much more motivated to do it for himself, with the help of his personal trainer. In both cases it was easy to see where the excess weight had come from when looking at the parents, mothers especially.
My stepdaughter did what I advocate - sit down with pencil and paper and work out WHY you want to lose weight, what are the disadvantages as you are now, what do you think will change in your life when you lose weight, what are the things you think might hold you back? And so on. It is no good looking for initial motivation from others, although having a support network to turn to is certainly a help, but the first moves have got to come from within yourself.
I have found that the Dukan Diet does it for me. One positive factor is having to submit a daily report on weight - many other 'diets' frowned on me for weighing daily - and also, any lapses. I find I have become much stronger-willed since starting this. I also don't like any diet which says 'oh you can have a treat e.g. chocolate'. Either I'm going to do this, or I'm not. And so far, it is working.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

well your in luck, weight loss is 90% about diet, exercise is not necessary, it will help a little and make you a happier healthier person which will help with motivation but you can loose weight without it
half a stone could be easy in 6 weeks but depends on what your goal weight is, if its 10 stone you could loose it in a week, if its 17st 7lbs it might be tougher
i like to look at weight loss from a scientific point of view, to gain weight you have to have elevated insulin levels, to loose weight you have to have low insulin levels and a calorie deficit, so if you control how much sugary food you eat and make sure its slow acting sugar you will be heading down the right road0
