Hello all, and a happy Bank Holiday Monday!

About carbs, DH and I normally have a protein-based breakfast e.g. he has 2 boiled eggs and a slice of wholemeal toast. Today he cooked me grilled bacon, tomato and a fried egg. For himself he decided to have bite-size shredded wheat. Result: an hour later his blood-sugar 'spiked' and he had to give himself more insulin. I don't think he'll be doing that again!!

'The old-fashioned way of losing weight', eat less, exercise more. Well, in old-fashioned days we didn't need to go to a gym, we were all much more active as a matter of course, walking and cycling everywhere. We weren't surrounded by all kinds of easily-available, easily-digestible, tempting-smelling foods at every turn. There was more effort involved. I've tried the 'eating less' and it didn't work for me. I've even been told that 'it doesn't matter if you include chocolate in your diet so long as it forms part of your daily calories'. Some 'diets' actually build-in a 'treat' because they say you can't live without a treat. Tescodiets is a case in point. A packet of Jaffacakes, but you're only supposed to have one!

I still remember walking to the next village to get the week's sweet ration, 3 or 4 ounces. So the effort to get those sweets would have cancelled out the calories contained. I heard a woman on TV recently saying that she has at least 3 chocolate bars a day. A day!! That's probably her whole daily calorie allowance, or nearly, before she starts eating any food.

Not always very helpful talking about the 'old-fashioned way'. But, if it works for you then go for it. Different things work for different people.

Went out for my jog this morning. Left around 8 and felt the sun almost immediately so thought it would affect my timing.

Jog 11km/6.98 miles - 1 hour 15 minutes (same time as last jog)

    Came home and did Turbofire

    Fire 45 minutes
    Stretch 10 minutes

    Total: 2 hours 10 minutes :j :j

  • What I'm doing at present is having no carbs at all, apart from those contained in the veg that I'm allowed alternate days. This will only last until I've reached my target weight, which should be mid-October. After that the 3rd phase of the Dukan Diet kicks in and I re-introduce fruits, except for 4, and wholemeal bread 2 medium slices daily.

    Hi margaretclare,

can I ask what are the 4 fruits you can't eat and why?

  • Afternoon all, can I log 4.30 hours cycling today. It was our club sportive, took some novices round the 100km and everyone came back in once piece, it was frustrating going so slowly but I remember what it was like to start and I was proud of my team for making it!

As for weight, I am plus 1.25lb this morning. Thought this would happen as I am tapering training for Sunday and eating 2200 calories a day in preparation. After the race I will go back to my 1200 calories for 2 weeks.

I am starting to get nervous now, but whatever I do it will be a personal best. If we have good weather and no punctures I am hoping for 200 miles, but who knows.

Nice thing today was I haven't seen many of my club mates for a while, one didn't recognise me and others were saying blimey you are disappearing which is encouraging! I an still pinch more than a inch tho.
  • Making it a habit to come on this thread and keep up with your diet/exercise plans for inspiration.:A

    1 hour aerobics this morning.
On the 2nd stage of my detox - adding some carbs and protein.
Will try not to weigh myself for another week as if I haven't lost anything it really demotivates me.

    Hi margaretclare,

can I ask what are the 4 fruits you can't eat and why?

Frodo, they are: bananas, grapes, figs and cherries.

Reason: all of those are extremely high in sugar, the kind which is easily-absorbed and causes a 'spike' in insulin. Not what I need when I'm consolidating my weight loss.

This is what Dr Dukan says:

"What is different in consolidation. Everything that up until now you have been allowed to eat (from attack to cruise) remains completely available. This is what I call “The Base” and you can always eat “AS MUCH AS YOU WANT” from it.
But there are some new items, below is the list of foods that from today you may include in your programme.
Fruit: You can choose any fruit you like from anywhere on the planet except for the following 4 fruits: bananas, grapes, cherries and figs. However, you can still make these part of a celebration meal (this way nothing is ever totally forbidden).
2 slices of wholemeal bread: slices as they are cut by the baker. If you go for a different sort of bread try and make sure it is brown and has some goodness in it, whatever you do don’t eat white bread.
40 g / 1 ½ oz cheese: Try not to choose a cheese with more than 40% fat. If you find a cheese to your liking with 30% fat then you can have up to 50 g; with 20 % fat you can go up to 55 g and if your cheese has just 10% fat you may eat 60 g.

Starchy foods: You can take your choice! Ideally you’ll go for wholemeal pasta, as it is rich and has a lovely, dense texture in your mouth. Oil and butter are not allowed but you can have a nice homemade tomato sauce and….a sprinkling of Parmesan on top! You can also let yourself be tempted by couscous, lentils, peas…go and look at recipe ideas in the recipe book in your slimming apartment.
Celebration meals: breakfast, lunch or dinner it’s up to you to choose when, so long as you space your meals out properly. You now have the possibility of eating whatever food you want to but just one lot: one starter, one main dish, one dessert or one cheese, one aperitif or one glass of wine. You can have a good helping of everything but only ONCE, you must never have seconds.
Protein Thursdays: this is the safety catch for your consolidation phase and it means sticking to a day of pure proteins every Thursday. This is equivalent to a mini attack phase when you eat from the 7 categories of the purest protein foods and still as much as you want.
Losing weight quickly is fine; what is vital is consolidating your true weight.
When you are in this consolidation phase you must never forget that over 90% of people who follow a diet regain the weight they had lost. You won’t be one of them, I am certain of that; you have got exactly what it takes to succeed! "

Cherries, really? They are the lowest on the GI scale.
