Thanks for the clarification, Eric. I have long thought that it was my insulin levels that were making it impossible to lose any more weight. This applies even in non-diabetic people, but DH, of course, has long blamed the insulin he has to take for his weight gain/difficulty in losing.

Jess, it IS possible to live without bread and not to feel hungry. I haven't eaten any bread at all for a month now. When I get to Consolidation phase in mid-October I'll be allowed 2 medium slices of wholemeal bread a day. I also haven't eaten the '5 a day' that we're told to eat, because I only eat veg on alternate days. From October I'll be allowed to eat fruits from anywhere on the planet except for 4: bananas, grapes, figs and cherries, because these 4 in particular are very high in sugary carbs.

I'm not certain what the difficulty is with the conversion from metric (Dukan is French of course) to imperial, it's what some people have been saying on the Dukan forums. I am amazed that so many young people say they can't cope with metric. To my knowledge it has been taught in schools since the early 1970s. I find it a lot easier, but then, I was also used to weighing babies in metric - been doing that since early 70s too.

Well, DH is losing weight too, although he still needs some carbs. He's down to 100.8 kg today, was up to 108 at one stage! I've told him: when we're next invited to a function as VIPs, which happens every June, I want him to wear his suit. He last wore it at our wedding which is nearly 10 years ago, so the weight has crept on in that time and now it's coming off. He's finding he only needs about half the insulin that he was using before, so that can't be bad.

Was pleased about yesterday. We went to see his first cousin and his wife, on the other side of London. Usually when we go there, she produces a cake and toasted crumpets. I've always had difficulty in convincing her that I don't want it - this was when I was trying to lose weight pre-Dukan. Cousin is in hospital today for the same prostate surgery that DH had in February so we went to give him 'moral support' and wish him well. Anyway, DH had told them beforehand about my diet and said 'We'll happily have a cup of tea with you but please don't feed us'. He explained about the Dukan diet. Bless them, she produced tea and a plate of biscuits, which she placed well away from me, no protests, no argument. It turns out that her cousin, who's a hairdresser, has also been doing Dukan and has lost a lot of weight. Sheila said 'I almost didn't recognise her'.

We were very late getting home after circumventing traffic jams in London. DH had beans on toast and I made my oat-bran pancake. Formerly, we'd have stopped somewhere, 'Little Chef' or somewhere like that, and probably eaten things that were no good to us.

  • 45 mins boot camp, 3 1/2lb Gain, gutted. I knew I had gone right off track this week food wise, just had a total blow out but I didn't expect it to be so painful.:(

Has given me a massive kick up the bum and I'm now back on track. Nothing but water for me for the rest of the month lol.

So sorry to hear about your friends husband Victory.

Always fancied trying a boot camp and there has been a few offers on Groupon lately. Might sign up if I see it again - how do you find it Froddo?

Thanks again for all of the information about low carb / insulin Eric. A few friends have asked me lately how I am losing weight. When I tell them I have reduced my carbs they are quite dismissive - telling me it is bad for my health and I won't be able to maintain it. Their main concern seems to be how I am able to live without bread :rotfl: Its good to the reasearch to back up my 'arguments'.

Thanks for the cycle interval training routine Trigirl. I always try to do interval training when I use the treadmill as you seem to get a much better workout (although I am very much a beginner where this is concerned) Would love to try yours but last time I used an excercise bike my 'dodgy knees' were painful for days afterwards.

Thanks for adding me to next weeks chart Fred.

    Jess
I friend in work told me about it. It runs for 4 weeks whatever the weather, monday, wednesday and Friday, 6AM -6.45. Cost was £67 for the 4 weeks, but she provides diet plan to go along with boot camp for max results. Haven't got my head around diet yet, but seems to be along the lines of what Eric says. At moment I am following SW as until this week I was losing approx 2lb a week.

  • WOO!

The last time I tried to lose weight was two years ago, and I bought a couple of exercise DVDs, including Davina's Super Body Workout. I tried it at the time and managed the warm up and about three minutes of the actual work out before collapsing (not literally) - so I took it out of the machine and hid it away in a drawer.

Fast forward to today. I dug it out and decided to give it a go - not only did I complete the whole thing, but I did 95% of it at the higher rate, and only a couple of times did I follow the lower impact version. I am so proud of myself. At one point I thought I might give up, but I just kept going and now I feel great (well, exhausted).

Davina wants me to do it three times a week, but Friday is the only day that I have access to a space to work out using a DVD (my room is too small, and normally people are in the living room). So, I think my work out schedule will be something like this:

    Monday: zumba
    Tuesday: rest
Wednesday: exercise bike - interval training/drills
    Thursday: zumba
Friday: workout DVD (for I have many)
Saturday: exercise bike - interval training/drills
    Sunday: rest

Hopefully that will be a nice mix of things to keep me interested in getting fitter. Once I am more fit I will look at mixing things up a bit, I think.

Right, I'm off for some scrambled egg with onion, red pepper and goats cheese :D

Hope everyone is getting on ok!

a common myth spouted by people who do not understand the biochemistry

the human body needs zero carbs to survive, it can quite happily live on fat and a bit of protein many tribal peoples have done this in the recent past, including those living in Alaska, native americans and the Masai, modern distribution of food has made this less necessary in the last hundred years or so.

Eric can I ask you how much carbs do you think are okay in a day? What are your thoughts on coffee as our boot camp leader is convinced it is a poison we shouldn't drink?

Tea is probably a poison too but until I know what to replace tea with (don't drink coffee), I'm sticking to it :rotfl:

the general conciousness is 100g of carbs a day or less (all natural slow release carbs as well) is the magic figure, i generally aim for 75g a day sometime i hit 60 sometimes 90, as long as i am roughly there i am happy

not sure on coffee persay, i know caffeine messes up your blood sugar something rotten which is why i avoid all forms of the stuff

i do drink a couple of cups of decaf coffee a day thou, theres some really excellent quality ones about now, nobody who has come to our house has said this is decaf (humans cant taste caffeine)

i love this douwe egberts decaff, almost as nice as starbucks
