MY New Year resolution - only eat if you are sitting at a table, and whatever you eat, eat if off a plate! I seem to have developed a bad habit of snacking "on the hoof", even low carb snacks like mini babybel, pepperami and nuts, which is not good!
Reading the Food Doctor book at the moment, looking at for a sustainable way for to maintain my weight, and avoid Christmas (or other) blow-outs, but my goodness, some of the suggested portion sizes are small!

I think this is one of the bad habits which has crept up on everyone and become acceptable over recent years. Eating at a desk in an office, eating take-aways while sitting on the sofa, eating while walking along the street. Eating from packets and paper bags as per McD's or KFC...

Eating from a smaller plate may also be a good idea. Use an entree-size plate rather than dinner-plate size.

Well done guys! Yesterday was my first day without having any chocolate in 2012 :) I thought about having toast with butter this morning, but cheerios won! I'm just going to have a dance now and then that's my exercise done for the day.

I hit the scales the other day and weighed 62 :( I was 60 at one point so i have some shifting to do. Day two of no chocolate coming up :)

Cheerios for breakfast? How many carbs/calories in those, how much sugar?

The only breakfast cereals there are of any type in this house are bite-sized shredded wheat and, mostly, DH has them as an evening snack to prevent his blood glucose going too low overnight. I don't eat any breakfast cereal at all. The toast might have been better for you, depends on what kind of bread.

Thank you for this. I've had a look at the Food Doctor website: http://www.thefooddoctor.com/default.asp

I find it very interesting. I read the first page, about a consultation in Harley Street. When I last saw my GP last April I said to him that, although I'd lost some weight over the past 2-3 years I was 'stuck' and hadn't lost any at all since the previous September. I told him that I wanted to be referred to someone who really knew what they were talking about and I didn't mind paying for it. I'd been looking at 'Supersize vs Superskinny' TV programmes and really had in mind someone like Dr Christian Jesson.

Well, he said 'no need to pay for it' and referred me to an NHS dietitian. That was April. I got to see her in mid-July. A very pleasant young lady but basically, useless. She scrutinised my food diary, couldn't see what I'd been doing wrong, I should have been losing weight on what I was eating, weighed me with my trainers on (!) which are heavy, and just suggested 'more exercise', which has been my problem from the beginning.

In sheer desperation I signed up to the Dukan programme, and I've been doing that since the end of July. I've done the first 3 stages, never achieved my 'target weight' although I've lost a stone, and am about to give up on it because to continue with the 4th stage would cost me more and I'm not convinced I'd achieve any better if I did, because I'm still wanting to lose and Dukan thinks I've reached my goal and want to maintain. Their individual programme is so far out of touch with what I'm still trying to do that it would be a waste of time and money.

However, I have learned a few things from it, will continue with the organic oat-bran and the 'protein Thursdays'. I learned that exercise in some form is absolutely essential and, in fact, my weight loss has slowed over the Christmas/New Year period not because I've eaten or drunk anything out of the ordinary - no chocolate or booze! - the pool closed down over the holiday period and my 3 x aqua-fit was cancelled. I'm supposed to walk for at least half an hour a day but it has been so darned cold. Easier to do in spring/summer/autumn.

DH and I are both eating a lot less carbs and a lot less sugar than we were, and this has benefited him because he's been able to reduce the amount of insulin he was using. I'd have liked to carry on with the second phase of Dukan - cruise - and I could have done, but I really missed a little bit of fruit and a slice of wholemeal bread. I took on board what Dukan says, however, that there are 4 fruits which are an absolute no-no because they're so high in sugar - bananas, cherries, figs and grapes. So, no bananas for snacking on, and no cereal bars which are full of sugar.

I like the Food Doctor principles, which make sense. And as you say, it's finding something sustainable which is important. I couldn't go on with the 'cruise' stage of Dukan for that reason. The only thing I'm not sure about with the Food Doctor is eating 'little and often'. I've never been used to this and would find it hard to remember to eat, especially if I wasn't hungry. Nowadays DH and I have a good breakfast and that keeps us going for ages. I'm still not hungry and we had breakfast 3 hours ago. I had 2 grilled rashers of bacon, a grilled tomato and a slice of wholemeal seeded bread. We never buy supermarket bread any more, not now we've rediscovered our little baker, who bakes fresh every night and you have to get there early or he's sold out. What he makes as a GI loaf is especially popular - it's wholemeal but has loads of seeds in it and on the outside.

Maybe the suggested portion sizes are small because you're meant to be eating more often than you would normally?

    Hi

Did another (paltry) 40 climbs over the weekend so total is now 160.
Need to get nearer the average if I'm going to do this - well, over the average actually!

ETA - including today my personal average is now @58 - there is no reason I can't do this apart from apathy!

Well, I'm just below 10 1/2 stone now and as I'm only 4 ft 9" tall, that means I'm still obese. 66.5 kg today and when I signed up to Dukan at the end of July, I was told that my 'true weight' should be 60 kg, which, at 9 1/2 stone, even that is too much. I never achieved that 60 kg. I should be somewhere between 8 and 9 stone ideally.

And who says you shouldn't weigh yourself every day? I've been told this, I've also been told the opposite, and I do weigh every morning. It's just part of my normal routine.
