    Hey Everyone,

Sorry Sparklers team, I missed weigh in :o. I lost 1.25 lbs... but at least that will give us a good head start for next week :p. Don't worry about adding it to the chart Fred, I'll just post a two week total next week :).
I hope Eric is ok, I'm a bit worried about him...

I was wondering the same thing... it's been a while.
... Although what do we do on christmas day? A run around the block after christmas dinner :rotfl::rotfl:

Running? On Xmas day??? :p I was thinking more like armchair aerobics! :rotfl:

  • Sorry for late weigh in guys, but only a STS for me.

Exercise wise 2 hours from the past few days :-)

I need to get a move on! Well done to all those cracking on with the challenge
  • Just to let you all know I got below 67 kg at last. 66.8 kg this morning. That's a whisker over 10 1/2 stones. First time for many, many years.

Still a way to go, but I couldn't have got this far without commitment, without determination, and without a lot of support from my DH, bless him.

Have joined LA Fitness where they have much better facilities. Going to water aerobics this morning, 45 mins jumping around in the pool. Couldn't do that on land - 5 minutes would be my lot! Also been to the gym, trying to keep muscles strong, especially leg muscles. I'm probably looking at more hip surgery (right hip replaced in 1987) and I need the muscles to be strong.

Any diet which excludes entire food groups (e.g. meat, carbohydrates etc) is a bad idea, at any age. Anyway, diets and counting calories make me think of food all day. Not helpful. As mentioned before, better follow a few simple rules, which have have helped me, too:

    - Have a comprehensive breakfast with foods that take time to digest (e.g. egg, wholemeal bread, sausages, but eat fruit, too).
    - If you get hungry during the day, eat! You can even eat some nuts or heavy stuff like cheese, but don’t eat them in the evening (they add pounds).
    - When you eat, eat consciously! That means: sit down at a table and concentrate on the food. Don’t eat while watching television or while playing on a computer etc.
    - Eat little in the afternoon, avoid eating at night.
    - Avoid everything that is sweet, because sweet things make you hungry. The exclusion also covers artificial sweeteners (farmers use artificial sweeteners to fatten pigs).
    - Avoid light carbohydrates (pizza, pasta, chips, ketchup) and avoid all snacks.
    - No sweet drinks, either.
    - Drink lots of water (that fills your stomach and slows down your digestion).
    - Eat raw fruit and vegetables (raw food takes longer to digest).
    - Less processed foods (e.g. whole meal sourdough bread) are preferable over more processed foods (e.g. white toast).
    - Avoid all alcoholic beverages (they have many calories).
    - Build exercise into your daily life: walk up the stairs instead of taking the lift, practise some press ups in front of the telly, ...
    - Avoid buses and cars. Walk instead or go by bike.

You will feel great, not only because you will lose weight, but also because you will do more exercise and eat better. As I learned with Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride - http://iitm.be/GAPSenES - this will have a positive impact on intestinal flora, which will help against cravings.

All this is very, very good advice. The only thing is: I can't do all that much walking, although I do try to do some, especially the days when I don't go to LA Fitness for water aerobics or the gym. Dr Dukan is a great devotee of walking and climbing stairs. The reason he gives: walking and stairs use the biggest muscles in the body, the leg muscles and the glutes (muscles in the bottom) and they are the ones that burn most calories.

People used not to have the weight problems only a few decades ago - no time at all in evolutionary terms - when we were all much more active as a matter of course. We didn't need to be told to walk, bicycle, climb stairs, because we did it just to get where we wanted to go! And of course there simply was not the 'snacking culture' that there is now, and the fast-foods everywhere and easily-available. You don't even have to do the 'hunter-gatherer' thing, going out shopping, just lift the phone and a meal will come to you, to be eaten in front of the TV.

I always eat breakfast, always have done, can't exist without something to kick-start the day. Have eaten wholemeal bread for many years, wouldn't touch the white processed stuff. This morning, had 2 rashers of grilled bacon, a grilled tomato and a slice of wholemeal bread. I don't need mid-morning snacks. Have done exercise for 5 days this week so far, going for a walk along the sea-front later. So I use a walking-stick to help me walk, so what.
