-1lb for me this week! :D Every little helps

Scales didn't print out my body fat though so don't know if that's changed - have asked the gym lady to get someone to take a look at it as it's £1 a go and it keeps missing it off!

    Every little helps indeed Cabby.
If we lost a 1lb every week for a year that would be over 3 stone!!

My first bootcamp this morning. I have to say I loved it - the sun was shining, I was out in the fresh air and the session was good fun. Not sure I would have felt the same if it had been raining - but a good start. My legs are feeling very 'jelly-like' so I am sure I will feel it in the morning.

Also had a nice long walk today. Fred could you add 3 miles to my challenge.

  • Butting into the thread here, sorry.

Wondered if anyone had any tips for helping out that tummy area.

I've lost 102lbs in total, 9lbs to go until at goal. My skin isn't flabby at all, but I have that little bit above my belly button that could do with some help. I can't see the next 9lbs making much of a difference to that bit.

Does anyone do any exerises to help tone up their tummy or go to a gym?

Just looking for any info on what people do.

I do a lot of exerise at the moment 1 hr zumba a week and walk to/from work x5 days a week (5.6 miles a day, 28 miles a week) and whilst that has helped me loose the weight, just need to focus on my tummy area a bit more.

    Thanks to anyone who replies

unfortunately it is scientifically impossible to target fat burning to a specific area :(

you can tone up the muscle underneath the fat but the body may still take the fat it burns from else where

Aching everywhere this morning after the bootcamp yesterday - so it must have done something.

Forced myself to the pool for a swim, which seems to have loosened up the muscles and I am feeling a bit more human again. So another 30 lengths across the channel for me.

At the bootcamp yesterday we did lots of plank type excercises which apparently are great for toning the tummy area (search plank excercises in you tube) Trainer said not to bother with sit-ups as they were 'useless'. Not sure how 'useless' they are, but I know I hate them, so I am happy to follow his advice. ;)

Heya, firstly welcome to the thread. :)

As Eric said, you can't actually target certain areas.

The thing is people always misuse the word 'tone', and I used to aswell. In order to tone up, you need to first lose the layer of fat hiding your muscles, and gain some muscle mass, to make your muscles more defined. (That's the definition of toning; to lose body fat and gain muscle mass which creates that sort of taut look).

Situps for this reason would be ineffective, because if you still have that layer of fat covering your upper abs, then you first need to lose it. But even as a whole, sit ups by themselves are pretty useless. You're much better of doing something like the plank like jess said.

It depends on what your goal is though. If you really want the toned look like this:

    30m4xgj.jpg

Then doing some full body weight exercises 5 times a week would be fab. Or doing HIIT 5 times a week, and an ab workout 3 times a week would be good too. Another option would be to do what you're doing now, but maybe do 3-5 sessions of weights training e.g. squats, deadlifts etc. for even 15mins at a time. Squats are really good because they workout your whole body not just your legs and you can even do them with dumbbells rather than barbells. Just make sure you're getting enough protein, because you don't want to lose any muscle mass, you want to maintain it and increase it. I understand though that most of this is not possible for everyone especially if you have any injuries or if you don't have weights and are low on cash or just don't have extra time. If you want, you can maybe do something like what I'm doing (Insanity workout program). I currently am doing my second round of this and every workout works out the core even if you may not feel it at times, and it also has 2 abs workouts in it which you will definitely feel lol. It has a load of push ups aswell which have helped me with my arms. It doesn't have enough resistance training for me though, so planning on doing a hybrid with P90x come the new year. It's very intense but if you feel you cant do it, there are other workouts out there like 30 day shred. Again obviously would depend on any injuries etc.

Finally, congrats on the weight loss! About the 9lbs, I'm currently in the same boat as you. I've already reached a low healthy BMI, but I keep changing my goals, because I still have unwanted fat on my abs, arms and thighs. So now, I'm trying to lose the fat but gain muscle instead. Remember weight = fat + muscle. You don't want to lose the muscle, just the fat. I know 9lbs seems small, it did to me aswell, but trust me 9lbs is a lot, especially when you take into consideration that muscle weighs more than fat. Alot of people during their last few weeks losing those stubborn few lbs, end up losing inches instead but stay the same weight. It's not that they haven't lost any fat, it's that they've replaced it with muscle, making them more toned and slimmer.

Hope this all helps and I wasn't just yammering on. :o
