Mrs Moo, you mentioned Springboard earlier in the thread - I lurk these days just trying to keep up!!
I was thinking about doing it to build my confidence personally, and also in the academic circles I inhabit. I can give scripted presentations okay, but asking questions or giving my own opinion is eeep! Terrifying! Do you think the Springboard course would help with this sort of thing?
I also wanted to ask if it's in a very corporate language? I get a bit turned off by some aspects of business-motivation-speak. I don't know why but it makes me a bit uncomfortable - though I recognise it's very legitimate and useful for a huge amount of people. I hope it's okay to ask on the thread, as I thought it might benefit some others.
Lara, The springboard course is really a personal development course. It addresses many areas of your life. From the "headtapes" that cause you to believe certain things and so act in certain ways, to how to take care of you and present yourself in the best way (ie learning your colours grooming etc) and every kind of thing in between. I loved it. It changed my life. The whole course is about building your confidence to know who you are and be who you want to be. It would ultimately help in presenting I guess but it would not be specifically for that.
I have been on a few courses about presenting but they dont necessarily give you the confidence to tackle questions and giving opinions. The trick is to learn how to handle the questions. What they have given me is the knowledge about how to prepare in advance which in turn has given me confidence. I also never give personal opinions in my job because (truthfully), the subject bores me silly too. I know exactly what you mean about being switched off. Think of a presentation as a chat with friends and just be you and you should be fine.
The springboard course doesnt use corporate language at all because it is all about Personal Development. I cant stress that enough. I was lucky that I had a manager who could see that developing myself personally would build my confidence in so many areas. I think he could also tell that deep down I was unhappy even though I didnt know it myself at the time.

Thank you everyone. I have decided that for now I am ignoring it. I need to learn not to take things too personally. I don't think she realises how rude she comes across.
Anyway if I get the promotion I will have a different manager. If however I don't get it and I haven't moved to somewhere else I will talk about it with her on my annual review if/when that happens.
Need to get DD to bed sharpish, it was way too late yesterday "Everything will be alright in the end. If it's not alright, it's not the end."

Just came in with a bag of kiddie gibble from car then turned this on - you spying on us again?!I also suffer from stationary !!!!!! - just love to look at/buy new stationary.
Ooooh big stock order is my very favourite part of my job and I love the power I have knowing where the gluesticks are hidden away so they don't all get used at once!So what would you do? Just let it go and carry on, talk to the manager about it in a calm manner, update your CV and get the hell out of there?
Carry on and discuss it with manager and document everything and do your CV as well, then you've got more options and you are being positively proactive about it.
Managed to get into work for 7.56am today - this has never been achieved since 2001 BC (before children) so am well chuffed with myself. My little bribe pot is filling up nicely now. New class are ok so far but it is only day 1:rotfl:Mortgage £119,533 going down slowly

Hi Cheri
That's exactly the information I was looking for. Thank you so much for posting such a long and detailed replyThe price was a lot but the company have offered me a student concession. I've just emailed to take them up on their offer. Eeek! I've never done anything like this before!!
I really feel that this is just the right time to do something to change. After my great experience in Kampala, I am disappointed that the changes that happened there haven't all carried over now I have returned here. So I'd really like to keep on growing in confidence. I *really* want a career as a researcher and it seems that in my field opportunities are just going to become less and less. I feel my fear of failure is hindering me already, because I look for the very obvious connections in my work, and am too afraid to take a leap and built an argument for something more complex in case it will be 'wrong'.

Hi Lara, I just wanted to say that all academics have 'fear of failure'. Everytime I write a paper I am terrified - not enough to be completely immobilised but really scared. Everytime I stand infront of my students (or any group of people) I am terrified - they will find out that I am a complete fraud and know nothing about anything (understand 'don't know everything about everything').
The trick is to keep going at it (I call it the Rocky approach to developing an argument). I love elegant arguments - a French writer said that 'perfection is when there is nothing left to take out, not when there is nothing more to add'. So, I usually go through between 10 and 16 drafts - but I get there. This explains why I don't publish as much as some colleagues (but at least people never have the feeling they are reading the same rubbish; the rubbish is different).
So keep at it; use this opportunity. I always tell my PhDs that they should grab it with both hands - a career academic and researcher usually spends ten years before they have the opportunity to do what they want again.

Hi all,
Another long day in SunFlower's flower bed: car repaired (thanks brother SunFlower), minimum time for household chores after that, but I've done what has had to be done, have to do some more Super Secret Squirrel project tonight (am running a bit behind but am not going to have any chance tomorrow night or the weekend as I'm going to visit a friend for the weekend. I have so much to do: need to buy more office suitable suitable clothes, and it's a fair drive, so I'm not sure if I should do it tomorrow night after work or wait until Sat morning, which will eat into the weekend? Decisions, decisions....0 -
Had a "New Family" meeting evening at the school tonight. Both my boys were perfectly behaved (you can read between the lines all you like there about some of the other wee ones present) until ...........
............... well you knew there would be an "until" didn't you?
Head teacher finished her presentation and then asked the one question guaranteed to elicit no response ....."any questions?"
Everyone else was doing the grown up - looking around the room, not wanting to be the one asking the first question thing that they do, when
..............DS2 throws his hand in the air and pipes up "I got a question"
................ silence in the room:o
"Yes DS2, what's your question?" she ask's
"Can I have a cuddle?"
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
With timing that would have put a comic to shame.
I love being a Mum

It will be completely different trust me. I know that I wasnt the only one of the 30 women I worked with to find it an emotional time. It was difficult at times because you have to be honest with yourself. That isnt easy. I do think that you will find it lifechanging. If you dont I will be very surprised. It will help you to face all fo the reasons why you are afraid and learn how to deal with that. I am a little envious I would love to do it again. I would also like to teach this course.Had to share this from this morning and forgot when I was replying to other posts.
