Mrs Moo, you mentioned Springboard earlier in the thread - I lurk these days just trying to keep up!! :D

I was thinking about doing it to build my confidence personally, and also in the academic circles I inhabit. I can give scripted presentations okay, but asking questions or giving my own opinion is eeep! Terrifying! Do you think the Springboard course would help with this sort of thing?

I also wanted to ask if it's in a very corporate language? I get a bit turned off by some aspects of business-motivation-speak. I don't know why but it makes me a bit uncomfortable - though I recognise it's very legitimate and useful for a huge amount of people. I hope it's okay to ask on the thread, as I thought it might benefit some others. :)

I was sent on Springboard by one of my bosses at the Uni at first I wouldnt say boo to a goose but at the end of it I could stand up and speak to a room full of people and field questions. I also learnt to say no too instead of always saying yes. It must have done some good because I was invited back twice to speak to the group until I got a bit controversial:eek:

Springboard is not in corporate language speak either, sure you get a work book and you can do the exercises in it but that work book is yours and you don't show it to anyone so if you don't do the exercises in it then that's ok too. Springboard is purely for women so there won't be any men in the room (they have their own version called Navigation).

I remember mine - there was me thinking I was just a secretary but I had these other skills too and it was the same for everybody else - we were quite a talented bunch really but we never shared that with anyone.

They do have speakers too - they are usually successful women who spend 10 minutes telling you their story, very often these women will be from your workplace and occasionally from outside.

There is a song that they use too - Proud...what have you done today to make you feel proud...

    I would recommend it.

Great, another Springboard devotee. It's a pity that we cant recreate it on here. You are so right about recognising the skills. One of the exercises we did was to think about the last thing we did at home. Mine was to decorate a bedroom. We were then told to break that down and I suddenly realised that I had to do budgets, maths, overcoming fears (climbing ladders) and loads of other things that are actual skills.

    September challenges begin - LOL:

So what is the amount of money you are going to have for discretionary spending this month?

Set it low, make it a challenge.

Make it so that you question every time you put your hand into your pocket.

It should hurt a little - Not a lot LOL

It's great to hear your views too Horace. Haha, I love your descriptions of your new-found confidence!! Thank you both so much for sharing. It sounds like an exciting time. If I'm honest the wedding has brought up all sorts of unexpected things for me, maybe some surprising things I thought I had got past. So I'm realising that I'm quite a sorted person, as long as I can control things, but if not - I turn into a big teenager :p there are some relationships that I feel terribly bad about especially with my family. Not because they're bad, but because they're not 'close' like I want them to be. If I don't do something like Springboard I think the opportunity to think through these things might get a bit lost. Perhaps I can make a thread on the 'other side' that shares what has been going on with everyone? Springboard for the Matrix would rock - well, we're doing that already I guess.

Oops! posted on t'other side and forgot to copy. One of those mornings - LOL

ON your road to financial prosperity (that long and winding yellow-brick one) - what are the pitfalls you have encountered, what things would you never do again knowing what you know now?

Go on - give us a giggle!!

  • Nice to see you posting Lara! Good Luck with Springboard. It sounds a great thing to do. I might look into it for myself.

Thanks for the thoughts yesterday. Unfortunately the meeting from hell did not go as well as I hoped it would, and in the end it turned into a bit of a slanging match between the Dean and myself. Although, one good comment she made to me when I was endeavouring to explain that we needed to enforce the travel policy of the University was, in a slightly exasperated tone, "You can tell you trained as a lawyer!". Damn straight! :D I was quite upset that she said she thought I was bullying someone because he did not adhere to the travel policy. I hate to be accused of things like that, and to be honest, it is not true at all. Unfortunately this issue now rumbles on, and my boss is getting involved (which is not what I wanted at all... but there we go.) Sigh.

Sorry... I am in a really whingy mood at the moment. I feel really low again. I have another month's supply of the anti-depressant last night... but I am having a really bad down day. Not surprising considering the week I have had. I have been trying to put myself first for a change, but it has been really hard. Hubby has been really ill, and so when I get home after work, I have to head straight into chores and cooking and stuff, with no time to recharge, or deal with the day's ups and downs before i need to be operational again.

Right, I have an interesting and complex job to do today, so I am going to get my MP3 player on and get stuck into it. I'll try and get back over the weekend, but not sure what we have on. I know I am singing at Church on Sunday after 6 weeks off. Slightly nervous about that, if I am honest, but it was so nice to be welcomed back to the choir last Sunday. I don't want to let them down. So I guess music practice is the first order of the weekend!!

Have a good one ladies and gentlemen of the Matrix.

  • I can't think Of any pitfalls that I wouldn't repeat because without them I would g have found here or the secret or bigger dreams or better financial understanding to have first hand experience is better learning curves than been told about it I mean afterall we came here to experience I know my journey will prevent me from been so easily taken by big credit and guide me to be more sensible amen... Whenever I discuss money many a times I've heard people say I can't afford a designer bag or something and I always say anybody can afford anything it's the time difference it takes to accumulate that money if you see what I mean maybe my night shift has sent me delirious xx

  • OMG! and :D by turns and in equal measure!!

Just had phone call from hubby... we have someone who wants to come and look at the house - Tuesday evening @ 7pm. YIPPEEE!!! But... the place is a dive, because we haven't really kept on top of it at all recently. Oh crap. Have taken the afternoon off work so that I can deep clean the place... and still have time to have a weekend and recharge the batteries!! (Or at least, that is the hope!!) Please, I need positive vibes... to have the energy to do it all, and for the person seeing the house to fall in love with it and buy it!! :D
