If we ring her too "late" or when Corrie is on she has no problem just shouting angrily down the phone and hanging up.

What a good time that would be to go and 'drop something off' and yell through the letterbox.....:D

  • Nah, I have no problems with relatives. I don't talk to anyone who gives me grief anymore and my life is immeasurably improved by doing so.

The MIL adores me, though. When her son cleaned the weed out of the pond for her, he was met with 'what have you done to my pond?'. He answered 'Jojo did it so the fish could move around' and the reply was 'Aww, she's a lovely girl!'. She wanted to get a puppy, everyone else said why not a cat, but she was having none of it. One telephone conversation and she now has two kittens, as she decided a dog would be too much work.

For a time, it was a running joke that my name had been changed to Jojo-such-a-lovely-girl, as it was her instant reaction whenever my name cropped up.

I think I made a good impression on the first day I met her and the now departed FIL. Now nothing I do can be wrong.

Sainthood can be quite trying at times....
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Every so often MIL will ring up and say

"Can I bring back that book / gadget / whatever Wotsit lent me in the morning? I'll just put it through the letterbox."

(I'm "wotsit" by the way. I've been Wotsit since about 1984 when I had the temerity to complain about being addressed by the name of my husbands ex girlfriend from 8 or 9 years earlier.)

So either she'll get no answer or an answer of no.

Either way, the household will be awakened at godforsaken o'clock the next morning by her banging the knocker and hollering through the letterbox.

When my husband goes down there in his underpants he'll see at least one grumpy faced neighbour framed in their doorway with a '"!!!!!!?" on their face and their arms folded.

Where is a 'down on my knees thanking god for normal rellies' icon when you need one!

Blimey OP you have brightened up my day, suddenly the motley crew I have been blessed with as family dont seem half so bad :D

You must really love your husband to tolerate such a daft brush of a mil for 20+ years.

My gut instinct reading your post was to advise you to move secretly. Dont mention it to mother inlaw or give your new address. Imagine the response she would get from the new neighbours doing that at silly o'clock.

The only annoying relative I have is my sil. She is mega organised and phones all of us around this time of year to ask us what we want for Xmas. I got my call on thursday last week. I have till the end of this week to let her know my 3 fav pressies and then she will choose which one to bestow on me xmas day. Honest to god its the middle of the year, we still have all of summer, halloween, bonfire night etc, etc. I dont give a stuff about xmas right now. Yet we all tolerate her madness just to keep the peace so she can happily fill out her spreadsheet!

far too many men put their mums on a pedestal!

I agree with you in general - apart from my own darling son, who rightly acknowledges my wonderfulness (-:

    As he's 6, though, daughters-in-law aren't something I need to worry about.

Oh and normal people eat their main meal at 5.30pm or 6.00pm at the outside. You must not ever deviate from that even on Christmas Day.

Blimey, she's be well hungry at ours. We have dinner when it's ready. Which is usually about 8pm.

I have never got on with my future MIL.

She's really sexist. When we go around her house we are expected to help with washing up and cooking (fair enough, we are creating extra work) but what I object to is that she expected me to do all the helping and not my OH because I'm female. She soon realised I won't stand for that. Housework is equal.

Charming. When we stay with my parents, we help with washing up / cooking / shopping etc, but OH helps as much as I do. Same when we went to his parents' house.

The scariest thing is she was younger than me now when I first knew her. Am I going to be like that???

My mother reckons the least helpful thing anyone has ever said to her was when she was 8 months' pregnant with her fourth child. Her Dad said, "Elizabeth, aren't you getting a bit old for all of this?" What was she supposed to say? "Fair enough, I've changed my mind"?

She was 36 at the time, so not exactly ancient, either (-:

He's getting into the depressing sexist stage, "boys are more interesting than girls, Mummy". Sadly.
