I've been looking for a new broadband provider for the past few weeks.

The two cheapest unlimited 512k services I found were Fast4.net and E7even.

E7even charges £180 for the 12 months but also charges a 'membership fee' of £20 and activation fee of £50.  They offera free modem and one month free.

Simply put this works out at £250 for 13 months.  £19.23 per month for 13 months.
After this period the price drops to the equivalent of £16.67 per month.

Fast4.net charge £9.99 per month for first 2 months, then £16.99 for the months after that.  They charge an activation fee of £58.75.  There is no free modem.

Simply put this works out at £248.63 for 12 months.  £20.72 per month for 12 months.
After this the price drops to the equivalent of 16.99 per month.

Did you also look into v21 and metronet? V21 have a one-off migration fee of £10, then for the first 2 months its £9.99 followed by £16.99 after that. Metronet charge £17 migration fee and the minimum you pay is £10, which goes up according to use, the maximum payment being £20.21. A new connection is £59.53. Arent these better deals?

I need to connect my Dad to BB in the next month or so, He will be a very low data usage user i.e. just reading news and share info no downloading. What would be the cheapest BB provider around? Any that provide a free modem? Or i can buy the modem & filters ourselves.

I use metronet, is that the cheapest around for low users i.e less than 250MB data usage?

Beachbeth - thanks for the reply.  I did look at Metronet but the important thing for me was unlimited usage.  Their services are all metered.

Also the V21 activation was £69.99 after VAT and the monthly charge was £16.99.  Not much difference really in price but when I weighed up the amount of positive feedback on e7even I decided to go for them.

But on Metronet, the price is capped but not the usage. Which means you are metered until your bill has reached £20.21 and then stops and the rest of your usage during that month is free.

Incidentally, I was going to change to Metronet myself and Ive just found out that you have to be with BT for your phone and we're with NTL! Bt are going to charge £75 to reconnect us! :'(

In my household the usage cap would be reached every month. Therefore it made sense to go for the unmetered service as it worked out cheaper than the capped maximum Metronet charge.

Seems the cable and BT people like to make it cheaper to stay where you are.

I heard of a deal with e7even where someone got 2 years unmetered for £300 - sadly they aren't doing that one any more.  Might be worth waiting until something like that comes along before you switch.  It would absorb the cost of the BT activation a little.

I'll let you know what I think of these guys anyway once they connect me.

    :)  Fingers Crossed

Hotpop free e-mail site looks great but for some reason it wont let me sigh up :(:(:(:(:(
  • since mid July I have been trying to get a MAC number from Pipex to migrate to Metronet as these seem one of the cheapest, Can get 1meg for pipex cost 512. However I cannot get answers from Pipex only auto responses. Any idea how to get a real person to answer?

Like peter_the_piper, I have been having a similar problem trying to leave Pipex >:(, and found the following worked:
    • I sent them an email to pipex@billing.net requesting to be transferred from yearly billing to monthly, and to refund my unused months. And in addition, to request my migration authorisation code (MAC).
    • I never got a response after 7 days (not even an automatic one) so phoned them up (on hold for 20 mins, but didn't use their 0870 number!). I explained my situation - no email response, want to quit, so please just give me a MAC number. After being forwarded a couple of times, I was put through to a nice lady who literally gave me my MAC number over the phone! ;D

On a different note, I feel I should warn people on one aspect of the V21 terms and conditions (which are very hard to find until unless you are about to pay).
    • Firstly, although they only have a one month minimum term, they will charge £30 to get a MAC number. This effectively means, if you want to change supplier you are faced with 2 choices either pay them £30 and the new supplier their fee (approx £20) or leave them (losing connectivity for about 30 days) and join a new contract (approx £65 set-up). :-/
    • Secondly, they're terms and conditions force you to waive your "distance selling" rights. Not sure how important this is, but I don't think it is moral for a company to demand that you waive your statuary rights - we don't have many! ???
    • Thirdly, they're default customer service number is peak rate (£1 pm) :o

So to cut the story short I will be migrating to Metronet, as they seem a lot better on all aspects.

    Regards,
    newBlue..

Forgive me, but I am new to this. I have been with freeserve for a few years now 1st pay as you go then Anytime and now Broadband. I joined broadband in April, and now find out that the speed has now increased to 1mbps and if I want that they want another £20 of me. Looks like they don't look after their existing customers. Also can any tell me if I buy any wireless modem router will it work with wanadoo?

    Thanks
  • Sorry to repeat myself but can anyone answer my questions? Is there anybody there?
Please help me, I'm a broadband virgin. I want to switch to broadband and having read Martin's article understand that an all-inclusive deal is the best because it includes the modem and connection fee. This seems to narrow it down to two at the moment - Tesco and BT ((19.99 and 17.99 respectively for the basic packages). BT's site seems to suggest that it is only on its next package (£24.99) that you can have two PCs connected. Is this the case? We have a lap-top and desk-top in different locations and we want to have the choice of using either for broadband access, although probably not at the same time. How does this work? Also, do I have to change my email address (from virgin.net) if I go with bt or tesco? Last question - BT's £24.99 deal offers freen online help plus a free telephone helpline, as well as other extras - do you think this is a good deal? Like all Moneysavers I want a good deal but don't mind paying a bit more to get exactly what I want. We're not into downloading music or anything but we might be if we could. It's mainly for faster surfing and emails. Help me fellow Moneysavers!

    Hi,

I have posted about this offer before (its in the referrals section), though I thought more broadband users would read and post here, so hope its ok I've brought it up again, (if not ill happpily edit it.)

After initially reading about the offer that e7even.com a few posts up I checked their site today and it so happens I came across a fab deal.

I've been looking to get broadband for a few weeks, I've really looked around and done my homework and this blows all other offers out the water, better than v21.co.uk and metronet.co.uk deals (for unmetered broadband). You get a free £75 4 port router BT modem and 3 months free on 'any' package!

    JUST GO HERE: http://www.e7even.com/index.html

Feel free to compare this to anything else and if anyone finds a better deal let me know, ill need to cancel my order!

It is only on for this weekend and the offer ends tommorow, Monday 18th October.

Anyone who takes this up please could you kindly quote the refferal code '708315'. If you use my referrals code, simply pm me with your details & address and Ill gladly split half the money I make back with you. Either via Paypal (if you are a member) of Cheque. That way we both get a little back. You never know with any luck I'll be able to afford the course books I need!

Hope this helps all those looking for that special deal, it truely is a stonker.

    Cheers

    JAV

(p.s.This post is a little thankyou to all the guys who helped me with the Argos bargain bagging last week.)
