Bailey, I always do mine on the loo, once I've 'finished' but before I stand up.....the reason I remember to do it then is because I remember the midwife saying not to do it while you are weeing, because stopping and starting the 'flow' can lead to infection and for some reason that has stuck with me, and I remember it every time I go to the loo. So I wait until the flow has finished, and do it then."I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250

Ohhh owwwwwwwww.....what am I doing wrong???? I had a really painful blocked milk duct a few days ago and was in agony for a couple of days with it. It eventually went, but this morning I've got another one, in exactly the same place...
I'm not wearing a nursing bra (can't live without underwires no matter WHAT the health visitor says...lol), but the blocked duct is as far from any wiring as it could possibly be - it's in the middle at the top.
I've tried hot flannels, massage, feeding with Natasha's chin pointing to the lump (something I read on the internet.....had to lie down for that one), it's just pants.
It might actually be the underwiring! I got a blocked milk duct (while pg!) because we went on holiday when I was 28 weeks pg and I sauntered about with my big belly and an underwired bikini top, the second I put my comfy maternity (underwire free) bra back on it just went away after 3 days of agony. I think the underwire just manipulates the shape of the whole breast in the way that it "holds" the material part of the bra in place (if that makes sense!) so the underwire might be causing the milk flow to be constricted in a place u wouldnt expect.
Mine was right behind the nipple itself so no where near the wire! After 3 days of my OH arguing that this was being caused by the underwire and me saying no chance I gave in and took the blooming thing off and hey presto! Must be the first time a man has given good advice about this sorta thing :rotfl:
Anyway I hope in your case its NOT the underwiring if you cant go wire free!0 -
Okay, I'll give it a go....just while I'm at home on my own! I'm not HUGE in the chest area or anything (usually about a 34D, although a bit bigger while I'm feeding), but they just look horrible when I put a nursing bra on.....suppose I will have to stop being vain!"I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250

Good luck Snaggles, I don't really understand what your are going through but it sounds painful. I want to be successful in breastfeeding No.2 this time so am trying to take all this info on board.
Hopefully it will be possible this time I nearly gained all the weight I did with Jack, so have lots of time to gain some more. Then the lack of reserves won't be a factor this time around.
Let us know how you get on.0 -
I'm just being a wuss really!!
It's only agony if something bangs against it, the rest of the time it's just uncomfortable, but paracetamol helps a bit.
I've never had a blocked milk duct before, but apparently you have to just feed and feed and feed on that side, to try and get rid of it (I though it was rather sweet last time that the only person who could cure the pain was my tiny little daughter). Luckily it doesn't seem infected as I haven't got a temperature or any redness etc, but if you do, I think the gp can provide some b/f-friendly antibiotics to get rid of it.

I'm with you, Snaggles! I hate the look of traditional nursing bras. I splashed out on an underwired nursing bra from Figleaves. (It's made by Anita and cost nearly £30!!!) but I got the price down using codes/Quidco cashback etc.
It feels really comfy and I haven't personally had any problems with blocked ducts etc. (Although I am still feeding regularly!) It hasn't restricted my milk supply either - given the regular leaks! (I nearly had an embarrassing moment on the school run as we were running late and I forgot to use any breast pads!) Perhaps it's the bra size that could be restricting your flow? You can fluctuate quite a lot so maybe worth getting re-measured?
I plan to breastfeed as long as possible (breastfed my eldest for 9 months so expecting similar) and I'd rather have an expensive bra that feels comfy and makes me feel good about myself. I just want to get re-measured and then I'll treat myself to a new one.:D0 -
I'd never thought to look online for an underwired nursing bra, thanks for that!:T :T I just presumed that because I hadn't seen them in the shops, they didn't exist."I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250

I didn't know about them either. I just stumbled on them when browsing Figleaves.
THIS is the one I've got. They do another one as well.0 -

Oh Snaggles! I had a blocked milk duct (and thrush) for about 4 weeks and it wouldn't go away. Then HV recommended feeding rugby ball style so baby changes position. It cleared up in about 1.5 days. She also said to rub from the outside of the breast towards the nipple when in the shower just to massage it and get things going a bit.
Really sympathise, it almost made me give up it was so painful  HTH
Imogen's really struggling with being sick at the mo. We think it's linked to her teething. About 3 nights out of 7 she throws up after her bedtime bottle. She doesn't seem bothered by it and thinks us cleaning sick up off her bed/the walls/the carpet/us is hilarious! We've moved her tea to 4.30 from 5.30 tonight as we wondered if she was being greedy and that was why she was throwing up.
Bless her, she still doesn't have any teeth to show for it either!MSE Parent Club Member #1Yummy slummy mummy club member50% slummy, 50% mummy, 100% proudImogen born Boxing Day 2006Alex born 13 July 20090
