I BF DS1 with no problems at all.
DS2 I got cracked nipples when he was 2 months old and again when he was 16m - so I gave up then
With Samantha I got them again when she was 3 weeks old
This time I tried really hard to sort the problem out at home, and had 10 days of agony before I sought out my HV. There is help there for those that want it, but it really is something that you have to want for yourself, but even then it may still not be enough (Mon-Thur there was help, but nothing on Fri-Sun) unless you are happy to contact LLL or someone private (which I am reluctant to because of ££)
We start swimming lessons for Samantha at the beginning of next term. I am so exicted :j.
Anyone heard from Bailey lately ?? See you haven't been on MSE for a few days, and posted even less. Just hope that things are okay :grouphug:0 -
Maz it is a real shame if you didn't get the support you deserve
I think it happens too often - which is why these campaigns are so important. But they are still not enough as most people do START breastfeeding - it's carrying on that is so difficult when most healthcare professionals know nothing about breastfeeding and undermine peoples confidence - that is where the problem lies
izoomzoom what are you paying if you don't mind me asking? I've started taking Elliot to an open swimming group and he loves it! It's a battle and a half though getting him and me dried and dressed afterwards  But I am thinking of something more structured like lessons for the future...0 -
I am still feeding Ruby and she is nearly 9 weeks old. I plan on feeding her till she reaches 12 weeks as its so tying and she feeds constantly during the day. I give her a bottle of formula at night and sometimes ( dont tel my HV) she has one during the day when shes fed off me for hours and is still hungry. I have given her formula from birth and although when I told the HV this she gave me one of those looks.. I think what is more important is a happy mum and a contented baby:j19.6.10 Weight loss 6lb0

It's interesting to see your breast feeding discussions. I was umming and aahing about doing it this time. I managed till DS1 was about 14 weeks, mainly through expressing and feeding him the expressed milk as he was messing around all the time pulling at me and making me sore.
DS2 is nearly 3 weeks now, and i had thought we were going well. Then Tuesday, i started with mastitis that still hasn't fully cleared, and now i have really badly cracked nipples. I'm talking a flap of skin that bleeds when he is feeding. Every time i have to feed on one side it is so painful it makes me cry as he latches on.
The pain goes when he is feeding, so i think he must be latched on properly, and he put on 9oz in a week. But something is causing this.
I don't want to give up, but can't put up with this.
Anyone want to share any tips for sorting out this? I have tried lasinoh after every feed, leaving it to the air for 10 mins after a feed, and on the last feed i expressed and then fed DS it straight away instead of him feeding from me. At least that didn't make me cry.
If i can't get it sorted i will have to give up, because it is not practical to be like this when i need to be able to sort DS1 out too.
buggies - i noticed the discussion about the mcclaren techno xt. I have this one and really find it good. I used it from newborn with DS1. I have just bought the equivalent 2 seater for the new addition. Not quite as good because the seats are quite narrow for DS1, but it is still a good buggy. All the bad points were outlined well on the last page.0 -
Sorry I'm going to have moan!!!
I have my period and wanted a bath but went 2 run it and there wasn't enough hot water!! One very unhappy bunny!!!
Anyway Ellie is now 21 weeks and I'm still breast feeding with no problems. I've had mastitis twice but apart from that, all I think about is the good that it's doing her and also the money I'm saving. It's not quite so tying now as she is on solids so doesn't look for so many feeds from me now.
We got an appointment yesterday for Ellie to see the cardiologist, so she will be checked over on 18 June (not b4 time) we've only waited 4 months to be seen!!!Everyone is entitled to their opinionEllie 25/12/070 -
Michelle, I don't have personal experience of mastitis (thankfully!) so don't have practical advice to give, I'm afraid. What you're doing sounds right to me, getting some air etc (I'd also recommend rubbing some breastmilk on the nipples - that's supposed to help due the milk's antiseptic properties etc). I just want to say, if you have a chance to go to a BFing support group (and I know it must be hard to find the time, especially with two), do speak to them. Or could your HV put you in touch with a BFN supporter?
I go to a breastfeeding group and we've had quite a few girls join who were literally on the verge of giving up, due to various problems, but once they got the support and information (we have a BFN supporter and a HV at the group, plus all the mums) they've all gone from strength to strength.
Breastfeeding is hard in the early days, but it does get easierGood luck.

Ok I know I will be starting a difference of opinion but I just want to get a general idea/opinion!!
What age do you think a 1st child should be when you start trying for a second?
TIA for your opinionEveryone is entitled to their opinionEllie 25/12/070 -
Michelle - I had the same pain as you when she initially latched on and I used to dread her wanting a feed. I used lanisoh regularly and also chilled savoy cabbages ( they really do work). Gradually the pain does ease off if you can stick with it - my hv told me as long as the initial pain ( i felt like someone was sticking a knife in me) goes the baby is on correctly. Good luck:p
Scruffy - I have 14 years between my 2:eek: and the age gap is brill lol19.6.10 Weight loss 6lb0 -
I've got 7 years between mine and I love it. Sometimes I wonder if it would have been easier to get all the nappies and the sleepless nights over with all at once, but I've enjoyed the early months/years with both of them so much, and they get on really well, so I'm happy with the age gap.
As for breastfeeding, I'm on the verge of stopping, because she's over a year old now, but I really like having her cuddled up to me in a morning (I only feed her once a day now). She's not that bothered though, and I always said I would stop once I was doing it for my benefit rather than hers. She gets much more excited at the sight of her bedtime cup of milk than she does at the sight of me in a morning (and who can blame her....it's not a pretty sight!!).
Just waiting for her to have the cast taken off her leg, and for her sleeping pattern to settle back down, and then I'll stop I think.
She doesn't like plain cows milk though, so I mix a fluid ounce of expressed milk in with it, and she drinks it no problem."I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250 -

Oh, I'd say about 5 months old! :rotfl:. We decided to just go for it as I'm 34 and DH is 33, although we didn't think it would happen so quickly! I didn't want a large age gap so the time was right for us. We have been together 10 years and married for 6 so fancy holidays are out and making a family is in. I hope this bump is as good as Poppy though or I'll be eating my words come December :rotfl:.
