I'm after some advice please...My little girl is 9 weeks old now & she has come down with a cold & chesty cough. Is there anything I can give her? She has'nt got a temperature. But she's really sniffling & coughing. Poor little thing,I feel really sorry for her!

    Thanks!

I'm hopeful that this get's me out of cooking Christmas dinner!

Baby Ruby arrived after 55 hours of labour & an emergency c section on Christmas Day at 14.41 weighing 6lb 6oz...And yes I did get out of cooking Christmas dinner!!:rotfl:

DS had cough and stuffy nose and HV said cest not to give him anything as it didnt seem to bother him that much...said to go to drs if vlasted for more than a week and he go upset with it... I gave him some of the infant calpol (2 months onwards) just to help him sleep at night. Really its better I think if they can build up a bit of an immunity themselves for when they are older.
Mum to 2 lovely boys who keep me busy.
  • Thanks for that. I've given her some of the infant Calpol in the last half hour & already she seems calmer. Bless her,it's horrible watching her suffer!

Becky, sorry your baby isn't very well - I think Snufflebabe can be used from very young (it's like Vicks, and you just rub it on their chests), and raising the head end of the cot slightly really helps quite a lot. Hope she feels better soon.

  • Hope she feels better soon. Our Alfie is just coming down with a touch of a cold now, so we're trying the 'elevate the head of the cot' technique tonight, to see if it helps.

Last couple of nights he has gone in this constant cycle from early evening of feed-change-not-fall-asleep-feed-change etc. His problem is that when he drifts off, even when he is exhausted, he fights the sleep, rather than allowing himself to drift off - the stubborn beggar (gets that from both of us!)

net result has been for the last 2 nights, i;ve taken him downstairs and paced the lviing room between 10-12 to get him to sleep, then tried putting him down, where he'll go for 30mins to an hour before waking up for a feed. but this way my OH has been able to get some sleep and eat and replinsh her store - otherwise he'd be constantly grazing on her, and it's wearing her out!
After that feed i've taken him downstairs again (I can sleep on the train to/from work to catch up!!) and the dog has been most bemused by this, got him off to sleep again, then when he is truly asleep (I give it 20-30 mins after he seems to be sleep to be sure) I put him down, and he's gone the few hours left till morning before getting me up for work!

As he's been drifitng off on my chest, to replicate the warmth in hsi cot, i've been putting a hot water bottle in there to warm it up, so he's not going from warmth to cool mattress - and that seems to help. We'll let you know how we get on with the elvate cot - although 1 question how do you elevate it slightly?
  • I put a rolled up blanket under the mattress or a small folded blanket under babies head worked for us

Don't know whats up with DS the last couple of days.

We got him sort of settled into a routine of going to sleep at 8, dream feed at 11 and sleeping through till 4. For some reason on Tuesday he woke at 3 and was awake for an hour screaming. Same on Weds night but at 5 oclock and typically last night I went out to local quiz night and he woke at 11, took and hour to go to sleep and then awake at half 2.... no wonder he has been ratty today as only had 1 hours nap....Goodness knows where he gets the energy from!!

Its annoying because feeds etc are always at same time and there is no pattern to it... drives me mad. OH on early shift so try not to wake him up but that never happens ..... and then LO smiles at you and its all worth while!!

Re elevating the cot - we put books under both of the 'head end' legs - roughly the thickness of a telephone directory seems to work. Just watch you don't trip over them as you walk round the cot in the dark though (we made the mistake of leaving them sticking out too much, I fell head over heels onto the floor, and Natasha woke up screaming). :o

It is horrible when they're poorly, I know. :o You can try them with saline nose drops from the chemist, it might help to clear the bunged up little noses.

Also, I love Olbas oil - just a couple of drops on a tissue next to their beds. I think it's okay for 2 months+, if I remember correctly.

But yeah, I hate it when little ones are unwell, you just want to take the pain and discomfort away from them. Both my boys have had ear infections this week, so it's been horrible. :(
