I was wondering the same thing about quotes Bailey as when I do it I never get the box bit come up.

Mum came round tonight to try putting DS to bed as she is babysitting on Tuesday when we go out together for only the second time since he was born. DS went down pretty easily so just hope he does that for her on Tuesday when I'm not here but you never know...

How soon did you start weaning? DS is 16 weeks tomorrow but HV was sceptical about doing it too soon?
Mum to 2 lovely boys who keep me busy.
  • who's a smarty pants then eh?

Thanks a lot Michelle, honestly I've been on MSE for 4 years and its taken me that long to suss it out.

    No stopping me now...

Generally all things being equal, the current guidelines state 6 months before weaning. With DS I held my nerve and went down the Baby Led Weaning route, which meant he was 7 months before he had any solids.
    The IVF worked;DS born 2006.

I waited till 6 months as Jack was showing no signs of wanting food, however I did have trouble getting him interested in anything other than yoghurt and pureed fruit. He was practically 8 months before I gave in trying the blue pot slop and gave him our food either mashed up or appropriate finger food. I nearly lost the window of opportunity as my HV calls it but now he eats nearly everything we give him.

The only things he still won't eat are ham as a finger food, apricots in any form and ready brek surprisingly (its weetabix every day). I think with the ham its more about the texture and how it feels as he's had it in dinners off a spoon.

The recommended weaning age was raised from 4 to 6 months as some mothers were trying to wean around 3 months, this way you'll get mother's trying around 4-5 months, as well as those who will wait longer.

As long as they aren't waking in the night hungry or constantly looking for food, they should be ok to wait for a bit.

Right I must go to bed, I'm starting to get quite uncomfortable with this baby, unsure if its going anywhere or just another false start. But if she's going to arrive i would prefer a couple hours sleep first.

[ quote]had a bit of a red mucus this afternoon and niggle cramps, but was told to expect that anyway and it hasn't let to anything so feeling a bit dissappointed. I'm trying to prepare myself for the fact I could be induced, I just can't see how else she will come out otherwise. I'm still 3/5ths, 41cms and she's bashing my bladder and cervix constantly, but I must have a very strong cervix as its not giving way.

:D I though this meant the baby was progressing well when I saw this on my notes ...it was weeks later that I found out that it meant 3/5 OUT ot the cervix I wss very dissapointed then ;)

Ooh, I thought J needed weaning at 16-17 weeks when he wanted feeding every three hours even through the night. He put on very little weight at that time . My helpful HV told me to stop worrying and not come to the clinic for the next session , to let him catch up. She's lucky the little man has now gone back to his usual four hourlies. I think his growth spurt was just lenghtwise.
Everyone I spoke to started at 5.5 months though.

  • We started weaning DS at 13 weeks in an attempt to sort out his reflux (as advised by HV, DR and hospital). We stuck to baby rice until he was 16 weeks old but now he has moved on to root veg purees, fruit purees (no citrus ones) and has discovered Farleys Rusks in a big way (so have I) He is 20 weeks today and is really loving eating and discovering new flavours. The most recent discovery has been trifle sponge fingers (which he adores).

It has definately helped his reflux and he is following the second centile beautifully. :T

Listen to your baby not the HV ;)

Charlotte was about 5 months. She was taking an interest in us eating and sort of looking around for something more than a bottle.

I started with her milk feed after her afternoon nap as she was most alert then. At first she just had 2-3 spoons of baby rice and fruit puree mixed together. Gradually increased that until she was eating about 2 tablepoons worth of food and we tried different fruit and veg purees. Then I started doing a dinner and tea meals, then brought in breakfast.

Make sure baby tries a wide range of foods early on. The more tastes you can get them used to when they are little, means they are less likely to be picky eaters when they grow up. My two boys eat just about anything!

Try and give baby your own meals too, so they get used to your normal diet. That makes life easier as I only cook one meal for everyone on an evening here.

There's a weaning guide on the Hipp website to give you ideas. It's very Hipp orientated but you can swop the meals for your own!
Here I go again on my own....
