Midwife told me to just put expressed milk on and only use kamillosan as a last resort as she reckoned the milk was more effective.
Yes, that's what I heard too. I didn't even have to express it as I leak so much :o, so when I was a bit sore early on, I just smeared the milk around the nipple and let it all hang out for a bit. :o :rotfl:

I have to admit though that I must be very lucky as I didn't find BFing too sore either time (that's why I've stuck with it I guess). I had a few days of mild discomfort but nothing too bad. I realise I am quite lucky.

Hiya Zoomy, welcome to the club!
  • Hi izoom!! I was clinging on to the Preg Thread too (and still pop in now and then!).

Poppy is thriving on Cow & Gate. I was planning to bf (even bought a wonderful glider chair!) but I couldn't manage it. I asked the mw for a bottle (ANY formula to feed my starving child!) and she brought Cow & Gate. We are so lucky to have had no problems and she even took over 30mls the very first feed which the mw said was the minimum amount they require babies to take before they can go home.

Luckily I had been given a steriliser and had already bought some Dr Brown's so DH just had to dash to Asda for a tin! We love the ready made cartons as they are so convenient but are quite costly at around 50p a feed. Poor DH spent ages looking on the shelves for glass bottles of formula before he was told that they were only issued by the hospital! :o How handy were they!

Funnily enough my neighbour's baby can't keep her milk down and has real problems and, you've guessed it, she is on SMA Gold! What do they put in that stuff? I probably would have chosen it too if I had preplanned!

    Hi - izoom :)

Charlotte was on breast milk at first, but then I put her on Aptimil as I read that is closest to breast milk. I did mixed feeding for a while, and she had no problem switching between breast and formula milk.

She went onto follow on milk a couple of weeks ago and I bought some Hipp milk (because I had some vouchers for extra Tesco points on it :o ). She loves that one, so I think we'll stick with it.

My SIL's baby is 4 months old now. She's only on breast milk only but she is the most sickiest baby I've known. She has to have a bib on all the time, and they go through loads of bibs and clothes every day - poor little thing!
Here I go again on my own....

Oh Natasha is like that, she throws up after every feed. She's not as bad now as she was when she was born though. The GP said it's a muscle at the top of the stomach that is a bit weak and she will grow out of it by about 12 months old. I hope so - she has thrown up on our carpet so many times we will need a new one once she grows out of it.

(I do clean it up....lol......it has just made it look patchy!)

  • my nephew was like that till about 9 months and then grew out of being sick. It has put my sister off having another one as she used to stay in a lot so he wouldn't be sick while out and about poor girl.

you lot have definitely persuaded me to not buy SMA next time. Scary how brand loyal we can be when actually it isn't the best for our babies.

I bought a nipple procector last night. Been able to feed from that side again, but it seems to make it more difficult as Sammy hasn't been able to drain the breast like the other.

Quick question is how do I sterilise the protectors ????????????? No instructions on pack ???

I think so. I've got the breast shells from that range (for collecting milk) and they have to be sterilised.

On the other hand, we don't exactly sterilise our boobs :rotfl:
  • Good point Dormouse, i'd never thought of that.

I think you are meant to sterilise as they obviously come into contact with milk, so germs can lurk.

I think I just did mine on the top shelf of the dishwasher which is supposed to be the same as sterilising. Otherwise you could just sterilise them in a pan of boiling water. There's an article here on ivillage - pg 2 gives details re boiling technique.

Oops, just seen on page 3 of article not to rely on UK dishwashers to be hot enough, so ignore that!

Are you telling me I wasted all that time dangling mine in a bowl of sterilising liquid before each feed? :rotfl:

I posted the other day that Charlotte spat white chocolate out. I was eaten some dark Green & Blacks chocolate today, so I thought I'd try her on a tiny piece of that. She loved it so much, she was trying to snatch the pieces I was putting in my mouth :rotfl:
