I'm completely baffled about how much babies should drink too Bailey - I know that doesn't help at all but I thought you might at least like to know you're not alone!

I've just started weaning, but I've got no information at all about how much food to give and when, or how many feeds to give, so I'm just guessing and hoping.

The health visitor is coming to see me on Tuesday though, so maybe she will give me some info (she's coming to see me about Ryan to see how his autism assessments are going, but I will sneak in a few questions about Natasha while she's here too...and she's bringing the scales to weigh her as I seem to be completely hopeless at remembering to go and get her weighed.....am i just a truly appalling mother??).

Dollop, I couldn't help noticing in your sig that you delivered your baby by yourself? What happened, did you plan on a home birth, or not get to the hospital in time or something? Sorry for the nosiness but it intrigued me. :o

  • Hi Snaggles,

I've give Katie her solids at her lunchtime feed about a tablespoon. I give her a BF first then solids then offer her another drink, doesn't usually take it. She then demands a feed about 3 hours later to make up what's been missed.

Katie also lets me know when she's had enough as she arches her back to slide out of her car seat!

No you're not an appalling mother just a busy one!

PP and Molezak, when you say that your babies won't drink from a cup, do you mean a beaker like a tommy tippee? Because Jack isn't competent enough to drink from a cup by himself, if I hold it and tip it for him some goes in the but the rest spills out. He can drink from his tommy tippee beaker well though. If you mean they won't drink from a beaker at all, then you are not alone, a friend of mine is having this problem with her 8 months old, he won't touch a beaker either. I am sorry I don't know what to suggest, but if you do find anything which helps, then please let us know so I can tell her.

On the subject of milk/water etc. Does anyone know how much milk a 1+ year should be having a day? Jack is having about 18-20oz a day currently over 4 feeds, but at a year I am thinking he should be dropping a feed. He won't drink anymore at a time if I offer so, he seems to prefer little and often to 2 big bottles night and morning. But if I start to drop a feed will he be having enough fluid? He isn't a big eater anyway compared to other babies, so I don't know what to do. Any thoughts?

Yes, I mean she won't drink from anything but a bottle with teat, flipping pest :rolleyes: I keep spending money on different cups to try, to no avail. Have tried Avent, Tommy Tippee and the ones with the little spout with holes in that spill when you tip up. She's just intrigued by the mess she can make, but not at all interested in sucking on it.

Re how much milk to take, after my previous question I've now researched it and am fairly confident that from 6 months you should aim for a pint a day. Obviously as they get older, that begins to dwindle, but I'm trying to add it into cereal, cheese sauces etc.

Charlotte lets me know she's had enough food, by pulling her bib up so it covers her mouth :D

Snaggles - do you have any weaning parties run by SureStart in your area? I got a pack with some weaning info in, some Anabel Karmel recipes, and a free spoon and Tommee Tippee cup.

I got a useful chart from the Hipp Organic club, which has a suggested timetable of how much food to offer. Hipp food is heavily promoted on it, but you can ignore that and offer your own meals. You can get a copy if you join the Hipp club on their website: http://www.hipp.co.uk/register.htm and you get a bib, spoons and free samples too!
Here I go again on my own....

hi snaggles to cut a long story short i had planned a home birth.i started about 11pm with contractions that were every 5 mins apart,i was about 5 days overdue, fones the midwife she says oh they might stop u want to fone back in a bit,i say well with the last one(i have 4 now) i called the midwife out and she diddnt think i was in labour cause i wasnt moaning n groanig when she gave me an internal i was 4cm dilated and midwife was shocked, anyway after telling her this youd think well the girls got good pain threshold but oh no she said i been on fone for 10 mins to you and you sound fine,i says well in that ten mins ive had two contractions, midwife says well i can come out if u want but thn if your not in labour i may have to go home again n come back again, well i felt obliged to say ill fone back later, anyhow bout half hour later i fones back saying i really need this midwife,ok shes ok her way,im in agony on the floor him mindoors stood there feeling helpess get to later n i fones back again wheres this bloody midwife im scared(did they do owt down the fone to console me did they bollox)shes on her way again, about 2,30 am i tried one push and my fellas like no way are u pushing if u do am foning an ambulance(like i could bloody hold it in lmao)got a fonecall its the midwife im outside can u send your fella out i cant see door numbers,he goes out i gave one almight push and baby had arrived, hubby walks down path with midwife whod asked him to help with her stuff and thinks to himself he can hear a baby crying thinks hes hallucinating, they both come in the door to see me there with the baby, ive never seen a midwife move so quick she found the home birthing bag and emptied it all over the floor in a panic, luckily for her he haddnt been born with the cord round his neck like the other 3 have,or i haddnt heomarged, anyhow 3 days later i decided to look at my post natal notes(u keep em at home with a home delivery) and the cheecky moo had put on it midwife arrive 3,34am baby arrived 3,35am lying cow i was fumming about that, luckily for her everything was all right, and shes lucky i diddnt lodge a formal complaint, but as it goes otherwise it was a dream birth my only drawback was i diddnt have a 6pack of stella in or i woulda guzzled the lot lmao(for pain releif of course)lmao

Dollop, thanks for typing out all that....sorry, I just love hearing other peoples birth stories, and that is a great one.....but  at your midwife - how cheeky! Well done for doing it on your own though, brilliant!

MadDogWoman - thanks, I started by giving Natasha a couple of teaspoons full of baby rice, and she has now just gone onto about a tablespoon of baby rice or baby cereal mid morning, and a tablespoon of vegetable or fruit puree when we have our evening meal. She's still having the same number of breastfeeds per day (5-6) but they are getting shorter, about 20 minutes each, whereas before they were just getting longer and longer!

She wont really drink other fluids in between though, the little monkey - just a few drops of water or very weak juice.

Becles, I don't think we have Surestart here, but I've been onto the Hipp website and downloaded a pdf version of their weaning chart, which is fab if you ignore the 'buy Hipp, it's great' stuff.

Feeling a bit more confident that I'm not starving or overfilling her now, so thanks girls! :D

    Hi all

About cups. Imogen drinks from a Diody and a Steady Cup which are both open cups. She hated trying to drink from a cup with a flip-up spout and it wasn't teaching her to drink rather than suck like with a bottle. She now picks up her cup and drinks on her own, but isn't so good at putting it down - she just lets go when she's done!

I got the Doidy from Babyzoop (http://www.babyzoop.co.uk/doidy.htm) and the Steady Cup was given by HV at her 7-9 mth check. It's wider at the bottom so it doesn't tip over, but doesn't hold very much water.

Doidies are great because they are angled so baby's face isn't covered when tipping it up to drink. The only drawback is that the handles are pretty narrow, so it took her ages to be able to grip it properly. We spent quite a while holding the bottom or holding her hands on the handles, but she's pretty good now. The Steady Cup only has one handle like a conventional cup and she drinks from this with no problems.

Might be worth skipping the flip-up spout cups and trying an open one? Just needs some close supervision! LOL

How on earth do you win all that stuff?! Is there a trick you could share?

Well done on your baby's birth BTW. Midwives really should learn to trust us sometimes!
