:) I might pop over in the new year for some shopping. depending on what happens next for dh. If he stays in uk its quite likely to still be stupid casual dress.....and he's looking a bit shabby in that sort of stuff atm....so need to do a very stern bishing session from his drawers and see what he needs.

Must admit, I'm 'casual' when out at work here.

Not a case of Clarks' Village though; more like Oxfam and assorted charity shops. :D:o

Sandboxie is easy. Tom will probably say its just a software solution and the best Sandbox is a hardware version, or Windows Virtual Machine, but it does give some extra protection.

This is what I think happens. It might not be exactly right, but it will give you an idea:
The (free) program Sandboxie puts everything you do on the Internet into one place on the hard drive, rather than having it scattered around, which is what normally happens. This is the sandbox. Then, when you decide, you can delete everything on that bit of the hard drive: i.e. empty the sandbox. So, if you get a virus, the theory is that it will be contained, so can be deleted.

It will run any program in a sandbox, not just a web browser.

    There's more info here: http://www.sandboxie.com/

Do you find it slows things down? I might get that once I'm clean again. Infected computer has been trying to run a full scan with malwarebytes but it took ages. It got been stuck on one .dll file for half an hour and hung the whole machine, so I shut it down. Good news is I've found a post somewhere in the wilds of the internet from someone saying that F-Prot managed to remove Expiro.X from their machine. So I might get lucky.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Shops here were a breeze. Went in, not many people in, instantly served at the tills, all shelves stocked/full, no shortage of anything really.... so got the lot in well under an hour from visiting two shops.

Nah. There has to be a balance between security and functionality. As I said, going to a sandbox is quite a radical departure for me: it is going further than I have for years.

What I want with my security is reasonable protection which is as unobtrusive as possible.

While I have used a VM, it was more for using alternative operating systems than a security measure.

Sandboxie is a very good, easy to use, and very highly respected program. In fact, it is the program I am using right now. I don't think a hardware solution is practical, and I don't think a virtual machine will offer you more enough extra protection to make it worth while.

Well... it's a pity, but sandboxie isn't available for the mac. Sandboxing is very low level programming, so it isn't commercially viable for them to make a Mac version. They would have to program everything from the ground up.

I know everyone thinks Mac's are invulnerable to viruses. They aren't, and Mac users are often much less aware of the threats because most malware is targeted at PC's. Which means when a security hole is found in Mac applications, Mac users are often much more vulnerable than PC users because they don't even realise they are at risk.

Modern viruses are often symptomless. That's a change over the last two years.

You know, I think that the fact Mac's haven't been targeted very much makes mac users in general 'virgin field' that sooner or later is going to be exploited.

The computer seems marginally slower at creating new tabs with Sandboxie, but I can live with it. My line here is pretty bad anyway and my 'puter is on its last legs too, so I'm quite used to less than instant results! Sandboxie will just create a new icon on the desktop without destroying the one you have for your ISP, so it's possible to choose which way to surf at any time.

I hope you are lucky with this. :)

Absolutely, hence why I was asking. I don't visit too many random/dodgy websites and don't run unverified files. The problem is I don't like any of the mac antiviruses.
