Speaking of teenagers, DDs getting uni offers now, mostly up north, about 200 miles away or 100 miles away. None local yet.

Any thoughts on what's best? Would NPs prefer your kids to study near or far away?

Depends, perhaps, on the course, accommodation, etc?

    Cycling? In London?

Don't fancy your chances! Might as well put on a blindfold and clown shoes and dance around a minefield. ;)

I cycle a bit. OH does it a lot - he reckons he does about 200 miles a week.

I'm the weird ife who would love household appliance for a gift (I know I'm not gettig one).

High on the list would be one of those vacuum robots that just gets on with beetling around the house by itself.

I'm not 100% convinced that this item should be classed as a household appliance...

That would be an awesome pressie for westie and us. He could chase that all day and the house would be clean for a change.

Wouldn't his chasing create a mess?

For your westie, I'd dig a big muddy pond outside if recent photo's are anything to go by...

    .
it woud probably create more dander and hair sheding..that the vacuum could pick up on its next swoop. Ensuring its longtanding usefulness in the home.

I wasn't saying you couldn't have one. Just that it isn't (arguably) a household appliance (at least in the traditional sense).

    Or leading to hoover burnout...

To all parents of teenagers, that would get called a Nunu. :D Be briliant in our house as well as our dog chases the vacuum anyway.

Speaking of teenagers, DDs getting uni offers now, mostly up north, about 200 miles away or 100 miles away. None local yet.

Any thoughts on what's best? Would NPs prefer your kids to study near or far away?

When at school in 6th form, I applied to uni's in John O'groats & Lands end, as they're the 2 furthest places away from where I am, & that was obviously the thing to do.

In reality, I bit off more than I could chew with my A levels, & had a year out as I wasn't happy with the grades I got. I worked for a year, then went to college & did a levels again - some different, one the same. I then went to a local university.

With hindsight, I think the local university was better for me (but I stress the "for me" bit). I say this, as related to the earlier "not a morning person" discussion, I'm not 100% I'm well enough self disciplining to get my lazy !!!!! outta bed to attend lectures on time all the time. I also think that for an 18/19yo there is a massive learning curve in the difference in learning culture, together with the learning to live independently on your own & be responsible for managing a house, budget, bills etc.

So, you need to consider the quality of the course at the uni.
You need to consider the quality of local accommodation.
You need to consider what support students at the said establishment have (v important & under-rated usually imo)
You need to allow your offspring to get a sense of independence, together with knowledge a safety net is there.

Have you spoken to DD about what they would prefer? Or is the question about what you would prefer? Because that then leads to the question of wheteher a 17/18/19yo young un knows what they want!

I don't mind but would much prefer them to study away than stay in their home city despite the extra expense.

Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield all fabulous cities to be a student in.

hmmmmm, where as one could counter living further away you would have had to develope these skills to survive.

Personally, I don't think it matters if its 20 miles away, 20 miles away or 2 miles away: its about how the young adult and their family rise to the challange of increasing independance..which you can do with them in the house or fail to do with them 200 miles away.
