got to the checkout and the £40 kettle rang through at £4 ruining everything.

.... And there was I thinking I'd done well in Morrisons today when I realised my £1.49 loaf was labelled as rolls at 99p. :(

He looks a lot different than he did in the first Grand Designs. He definitely looked better then :o

There is one spooky episode where some woodman is building a wooden house in the woods ... I think he makes charcoal for a living (or not). Anyway ... this bloke in the woods was the spitting image of the GD bloke. In one shot they were sitting beside each other and they really looked like very close brothers.

I see what you mean 'So Mrs MichaelsMIL when you applied for a visitors visa you made out how much you had to return for to convince us that you would indeed return and now you are actually telling us you have nothing to return too and your only option is to stay...'

Yup. I've seen quite a few refusal letters along those lines. It can get nasty, people can start muttering about perjury and immigration offences, too.

So thanks to Google I now know what a BOC is but it still doesn't seem to give you right to abode unless you have been resident for most of the most recent 5 year period and not subject to immigration control for the last year of that period.

OT but it seems there might be a route for those who could afford the legal fess but no option for those who can't :(

Being a BOC doesn't give you the right to abode. But being a BOC who has, in the past, had indefinite leave to remain can exempt you from the requirement to return as a resident within 2 years of the last period of residence.

It's complicated, though. And having come as a visitor while the above applies can complicate it further.

She might also look at ancestry visas, depending on the facts of her family.

Is it "right to abode"? I thought it was "right of abode". Can somebody clarify?
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Are you up very early or very late, Lydia?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Lydia posted before 5AM, which I find a scary pre-pre-dawn sort of time, which I rarely see. I was woken up this morning by the moonlight streaming in through the window (curtains not drawn). It's an almost full moon and very bright. I was surprised how bright it was, because the moon is at the apogee of its orbit at the moment.

I'm up before dawn today because I have to catch a ferry at 11.30 that's 3 hours drive away.

There is someone with an insolvent estate running a thread here:

    Your wisdom might be useful?
  • First question - might she still have the right to abode (RTA)? That's the starting point. If she does (and it would be worth investigating her immigration history to make sure) then that would be by far the easiest way to do it.

Assuming that she doesn't have RTA, the next step is to consider the relevant passage in the Immigration Rules HC 395 (as amended). But I fear she might struggle.

It is tough in this 7,000,000,0000 world isn't it !

Does the technique of flying to Eire and walking across border still work?
The people I know who did it were white which probably helps.

I did it out of the USA into Canada - caused something of fuss and that was in 1965.

    Happy simpler times.
