The Word equivalent is great, but if you push the envelope with the Excel equivalent there are things you can't do with it. If all you want to do is some correspondence and basic spreadsheets though, they are absolutely fine. Several people I work with run their small businesses on OS software.
From time to time I hear rumours that the public sector will flirt with OS software as a way of cutting costs, I'll be interested to hear what happens when a really huge big organisation tries it.
See my post above.
Work are going to provide me with a netbook, allowing me to get out with the students a lot more & be more accessible. Never used one before. Is it just a tiny laptop?:o

I'm contemplating some breakfast...I'm not hungry, but my mother is visiting, so I could do with the special super hero powers promised from some cereals.
Still, on the brighter side, its lovely to see the sky again instead of cloud.
Vinyl
There are certain albums that simply have to be on vinyl.
I recently bought a new EP by Mogwai on vinyl. It's lush!
Special music gets bought again on vinyl by me. I have thousands of cd's. My vinyl collection is smaller, but very precious...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
smartphone - got it, have discussed it in previous posts so won't repeat it here Never used one, & tbh don't see a huge need atm. Once every 3 months I am in a situation where one might be helpful, but not essential. My phone is 4 years old. I can make/recieve calls & texts. That's what I need it for...
ipod - got it, use it but not as much as I used to Have debated getting one, but am likely to stick with a non-apple mp3 player. Think they're a bit pricey tbh.
ipad - can't see that it would be useful to me ATM Never held one. Was lent a small tablet recently & didn't find it was useful.
wii - got one that the kids use sometimes Nope, but I'm not a gamer
tumble dryer - prefer a washer tumbler (I mostly hang stuff up to dry, but like to be able to put on an emergency half load of "wash and tumble" when I realise at bedtime that there's no clean uniformfor the following morning.) I don't like tumble dried clothes. Dunno why...
dishwasher - would be lost without it I actually prefer manual washing
E-reader - can't see that I'd use it ATM I still prefer a book. Singlesue's comments reign in response to this one.

So far, I'm managing extremely well with public domain ebooks. I haven't spent a penny on buying any books from Amazon. There's great (free) ebook management software called Calibre.
My only chance to "read" is via audiobooks when iI'm driving in my car. I download public domain ones from librivox.
Can get seralized ones fron podiobooks (but not tried them yet) and of course I download podcasts from "selected shorts" (lasts an hour with 1, 2 or 3 short stories).
The Moth podcasts are true short stories read out without notes at public readings and last 15-20 minutes. Strongly recommend them. Both sets of podcasts can be downloaded from itunes for free.
Used to download stories from litrix but it's full of dead links now and needs serious updating and maintenance!
As for actual reading, as well as those kids bedtime story sites I posted ages ago, i also found more highbrow ones like squashed philosophers - kind of like learning new stuff :AThere is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
I think I would was it down the drain as quickly as possible, to be honest. Maybe empty a bath full of water down, and flush the toilets.
kosher... maybe I'm wrong, but it seems different Jews follow different rules, apart from the main ones that you find in the bible.
I'm tired, I've been learning about blackjack for no apparent reason. Who'd have thought there actually WAS a use for maths.
As a child, my grandparents used to baby sit me & my brother a lot. They regularly had us playing games like crib, as well as a fair few others (spoof, whist etc) to help us with mental arithmetic. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Take care, LydiaWhen I visit, I talk to her when she's awake, about simple things she might be able to follow, but she sleeps a lot. I talk to my dad about the things I used to talk to her about because she can't understand any more.
Please please spend as much time with her as you can...probably superfluous stating that as I'm sure you do.
It's one thing I will never forgive myself when my dad died. The last time I saw him was early July '09, he died late August '09. He had a stroke back in 2002 and gradually withered away since then. From walking aided with a stick to being bed ridden, from being able to have a normal chat to just the simple things being answered with "yes" or "no" or just a nod near the end.
And I can find excuses like we live here and they live over there and we have 'commitments' over here and I don't have holidays left to visit yadda yadda....
But it's just not good enough. It was dad and I should have been there.0 -
Ok everyone, apologies for not being about much. Just so busy atm!
Lydia, Best wishes to you & yours.
There's been some fascinating stuff dotted around the thread recently. I have learned a lot of stuff relating to the jewish faith that I didn't have an inkling about.
I went to see Simon Callow in a 1 man show by Charles Dickens - Dr Marigold & Mr Chips, but 2 mins in the lights failed, & they ended up cancelling the show.:(
Last night I went to see Dreadzon in a little venue in Brum. Never seen them before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VH9tAIChM5M

Jerry Sadowitz is brilliant IMO. He went to the Just for Laughs festival a few years back.
"Canada. Crazy country. Half of you speak French and the other half let you get away with it. Anyway shouldn't you be speaking f...ing Sioux or something?".
At that point an audience member punched him and Mr S was led away presumably to contemplate cultural sensitivity.
Mrs G & I along with BiL and his OH are off to see Eddie Izzard next week. I can't wait.
If you have a spare couple of minutes search you tube for 'Lego Death Star Canteen' (NSFW) or 'Lego cake or death' (SFW).0 -

I saw Jerry a year ago. Hilarious, but very offensive. I loved it though.
Re Montreal, I know he did that joke. I was under the impression that the punch came at another show when he was announced, walked onstage & shouted "Hello Moose f***ers" into the mic. That was when an irate personage jumped up & punched him.
Saw Eddie Izzard last year too. Was very impressed with the first half of the show. Personally I got a bit lost in the second half, but I think that's because it was a huge arena & we were far away...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

I'm probably conflating two stories. The moose 'lover' thing seems to ring a bell now you mention it.
Izzard is in a theatre seating a few hundred I think. As the last rich English speaking country (unless you count Canada but as they say in the South Park film 'it's not a real country anyway') we are getting a lot more interesting people over. Steven Fry (ph?) did a stint as did Alan Davies (Gooner so not seeing him).0
