You should still get a giftcard if the product went through a self-scan checkout. The only exception is if the item has been double scanned. Not that that stops people asking, mind you.

The Asda close to me is ok with giving out the £2 gift cards. I do generally ask for it though as they never mention they're going to give one as they are sorting the refund.

The Asda close to my mother's however I've had issues with. I got told that you only get a refund if you'd left the shop and gone home. At the time I'd been overcharged on some straws, so I just got the refund and an explanation about having to go home. It just happens she didn't give me my straws back and I only realised once I got home. I promptly asked for the gift card when I went back to collect the straws lol.

Also at that store, when my mum asked for the £2 card, a manager had to come down and sign something. Never had that happen at my store.

I did have issues too at my store with internet coupons. I got told they weren't accepted. I emailed Asda and they replied saying they should be, and to take the email in in future if I have any problems. This was a few years ago tho.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.
  • Hi,

Does anyone happen to know what Asda policy on undercharging is?

I was undercharged on a 4 Pack of Triple Chocolate Muffins, SEL was £1.58 and the actual price charged at self-scan was £1.40 so £0.18p undercharge.

I went to CS and explained they said "well you have saved £0.18p then". I said well when you get overcharged it is a refund of the overcharge and a £2 shopping card for informing you of the fact, I was led to believe it is the same when you are undercharged. No they said, it is only if you are overcharged.

At this point they were laughing.

I rang the store today and explained to the duty manager who talked about the overcharging policy again. I explained that if a customer informs them of an overcharge then the customer is helping them to stop losing money. He said the prices are centrally updated so they would never lose money.

My view is that if they are showing prices more expensive than they really are, some customers could be put off purchasing said products and therefore they are in fact potentially losing money.

Anyway to cut a long story short I was put onto CS manager and they will provide me with a £2 shopping card next time I'm in store but they had never encountered someone ask for this due to an undercharge before (but they hardly advertise the overcharging policy do they?)

Just wondering if anyone knows the score here? I did ask "has your policy changed, and if so when?" but of course they don't know.

Also perhaps a little off-topic but does anyone know what happens if regular priced products, for example Asda Smart Price Pasta Shapes at £0.18p are out of stock, or special offers for example Clover 1KG £2.00 are out of stock?

I wanted 2 x Clover 1KG at £2 each (total £4) but they had none. They had lots of Clover 500g at £2 each but wouldn't let me have 4 x Clover 500g for £4, they wanted double as much i.e. £8, when pressed they said I could have ONE with a pound knocked off.

Every time I go in they never have any of the above products, you must have to get there really early to stand a chance. The customer services phone number just said it is store discretion with doing a different pack size at the same equivalent price.

They said the manager would ring me to discuss stock availability as a few other lines whenever I go in later on in the day they never have, but of course I haven't heard off the manager.

It's £2 a misprice which means both over- and under-charge
  • I find it annoying when you go to CS thinking they've overcharged on a 3forX or whatever offer, to find that they've put offer and non-offer stuff beside each other on the shelves that look almost identical... and it's always me that seems to have picked up one of the wrong thing by mistake.

Also, people mention asda staff scurrying off to rectify a SEL mistake... but in my experience (at least twice), the CS haven't bothered to check the products to see if I have been overcharged because 'it's been like that all day'.

Plus, if it's one £2 per overcharge, is there anything stopping you from going back into the store, and buying more of the item in order to get more giftcards? I can imagine the faces on CS people who are already notorious for their sour looks if you're there every few minutes with a new receipt!
I guess this is why they don't like doing it on self checkouts, you could get a pile of separate receipts with an error on each...
  • i bought some maris piper spuds today with a £1 sticker on the pack and also under a £1 banner over the section- it wasnt until i got home that i realised i had been charged £1.40!!! can i ring the customer services number and get the gift card sent out? or alternatively do i have to go to the actual store the transaction happened in? im not going to be in the area until next week so would like to sort it out sooner if possible, am quite annoyed that i didnt check the receipt before i left! also if i can get it by phoning, can anyone give me the correct number? thanks!!

Clothes Golden Rule: Never pay full price unless it is an utter bargain in the first place!
Sales, boots, charity shops, ebay- why would anyone ever pay full price for anything??!
  • Just a quick update; when I went to collect my £2 shopping card for the undercharge I took my receipt and packaging, the CS manager said she had spoken to Asda House and that a £2 shopping card for an undercharge isn't their policy and so I couldn't have one.

I was annoyed at having my valuable time wasted and I was offered an insincere and sarcastic apology. I have sent a letter of complaint to Asda House and since then I've been undercharged again at least once.

They even left the incorrect price up for quite a few days after I'd told them about it. Shame about that since the staff in my local Asda were always so much better than in Tesco.

My CS is ok and nearly always give the giftcard cheerfully but they did point out that you did not get one if the overcharge was on the self service till. Then you only get a refund. Presumably it is your own responsibility to watch the screen as you swipe and pack!

I got one after using SS. Challenge them if they get funny after all it is their fault and its not aa though you can key in prices yourself? Unless you put through a million onions instead of one?
