I have also been refunded today, but oh surprise surprise my room I wanted to get in the sale for £10 has gone upto £20.

Oh well they can stuff it because why should I pay double just because they decided to take everyones money again.

This wouldnt be AS bad if this had happened say a couple of days after the first amount was taken but how the heck can it happen a month later just out of the blue?

Another surprise is that they havent responded to one of my emails yet even though I have now sent three!!

I have also been refunded, but I'm afraid I have lost most of the little trust I had in Travelodge. Not cool.

I also booked yesterday and no no payment has gone out ...weird?

Probably not a problem - nothing is showing on my bank account online but I've just phoned First Direct and just one payment is pending to be taken out today. I will keep an eye on it though.

I cant see Travelodge being 'stupid enough' to forget taking money from your account. You know there fine deducting it twice with no apology but Im sure they are more careful about collecting our money seeing as that's obviously the most important thing for them, they seem to have no respect for customers at all.

If there is one thing I cannot stand about some companies its being ignored. It really does shock me the way they cant be bothered to respond to our emails, tweets or phone calls, im sure if it was on Watchdog or in the newspaper or something they would respond like a flash though!

why the panic we are getting refunds re the lady who has no money to put petrol in car (not sure of the relevance of your child) if you have no money at all wwhy waste the money you did have on cheap rooms .....

Wow, can't believe this comment! I think the relevance is pretty simple, eg: (i) 15th of the month is pay day for many people, therefore 13th of the month most people are not going to have much left - the date I think is critical for many people, (ii) the relevance of the child and the petrol is that this lady obviously had an appointment to keep that she couldn't cancel and she didn't have enough money left in her account for petrol due to it being taken out by Travelodge! and (iii) most (not all) of the people affected have booked CHEAP rooms with Travelodge because we budget our money very carefully. I don't consider a travelodge reservation of £10 to be a waste of money, especially if I would have had to book a room anyway.

My dad had checked his account yesterday morning and he too was charged twice for a full payment £110 for two night stay, not sale room. I saw about it on here last night and have just let him know that some people were being refunded so he will check his online banking. He is still angry tho. Not coz they couldnt afford the duplicate payment, thankfully they can manage without it BUT because he has verified by Visa set up and doesnt understand how the 2nd payment could have been authorised without those details being entered again. He will speak to his bank (Santander) about it and see what they say but seems very safety lacking to me.

Thanks to those who have updated the refund details and OP for bringing it to our attention!

From my chat with the security guys at FD, it seems TL took the payment using the same authorisation code as the first one. So therefore, the code generated by VbV the first time was still valid, because it was a hashed and processed combination of the amount, vendor ID, card number, VbV ID, and CVV.

Thats a very good point, I also have verified by visa set up although I suppose if it is the banks fault (HSBC who apparently run their financial side of things) they can retake the money without the verified by visa etc?

If you have a look on their twitter page : https://www.twitter.com/travelodgeuk you will see that this morning they have responded to a COUPLE of people. What lets have a look, have a guess what tweets they chose to respond to? Tweets which mention health and safety being broken and bad complaints about hotel rooms, nothing in reply to those querying the double payments (expept maybe one with a very basic response).
  • Just checked my bank account after booking one room yesterday for £10, which they had taken, but now also showing a refund for £10. So possibly got the room for free!

    What an ignorant comment.

Yes, we are getting refunds, that is not the issue (otherwise it would be classed as theft). However, Travelodge didn't even inform anyone this had happened other than the banks. It was left to us to find the debit on our account and then get to the bottom of it! An email from Travelodge would have caused less "panic" as we didn't have a clue what was going on until WE had to ring our banks!

I don't have a lot of money at the moment, but I had a lot more when I booked with Travelodge 5 weeks ago and this came at the worst time in the month so sent me into an unauthorised overdraft. Am I supposed to make sure I have more in there in case a company decides to charge me twice? I am in the process of moving house at the moment and have just paid out a massive amount in rent and deposit AND was the day before payday which is why I didn't have much in the account - though I DID make sure I had enough in there to cover what was due to be coming out legitimately! To blame someone for the fact this left them with no money is completely wrong! And you also have to bear in mind these aren't all small amounts - look at Patsy who was charged £600 twice!! And to suggest someone shouldn't be spending money on Travelodge is just rude. You don't know their circumstances and frankly it's none of your business. What Travelodge did was completely wrong and the way they have handled it single is not good. Any problems caused as a result of Travelodge's wrongdoing are NOT the fault of the customer in any shape or form!

And aside from the inconvenience of it all, it is EXTREMELY worrying that this was allowed to happen in the first place. A company can't just randomly take money from your account and say "oh, it's ok, you'll get it back" - that doesn't make it OK! It's a big security worry and it should not be possible for this to happen. It has been badly handled and aside from the forum post from Travelodge (?) on here, I have had no response to my email nor even a blanket email to all those affected which would be really simple for them to do.
