Yeah but you can prove anything with facts.

I hate to spoil prejudice by introducing accuracy into things but unfortunately sometimes temptation gets the better of me. :-)

Anyway, I'm quite suprised that June saw a >1% increase, let alone any increase. Having said that, monthly figures seem to be quite erratic so I doubt this is a clear sign of "recovery".

There's a simple explanation for this. The South East and London factor and a very low volume of sales........................and low interest rates of course.

Give it a few months and we'll be back to positive territory. Not only that, asking prices should rise by quite a bit as expectations of house prices rises become widely entrenched again.

And who is going to buy all these higher priced houses? It wont be FTB who at the moment cant buy them at the current prices. And we all know the market is nothing without FTB.

The plural of annecdote isn't data.

The data show that car production is up 4.7% on the year (link - tab 4.1d) and retail sales are up 2.8% on the year (link - tab 5.1). Services turnover increaed by 6.1% in the year to April 2011 (link).

OK, I'll tell anyone who tells me that their business is quiet, or they are losing their job that things are looking up.

I tend to live my life and make my judgements based on real world experiences and news reports, not just what the media tell me. The service sector might be doing a little better overall, but no doubt that's something to do with including figures from that other country - London.

With some fairly hefty increases in unemployemnt coming and inevitable interest rate increases I severely doubt that the housing prices are going to be doing anything significant in an upward motion anytime soon. Rather the opposite. IMHO, DYOR

    You've contradicted yourself there.

London is in the UK btw, if you haven't noticed.

House prices can rise on the back of dwindling transactions, ultra low rates and lack of forced sales.

I think Dervprof was being sarcastic in that it may as well be a seperate country from the rest of the UK.

Its a difficult one this - but do feel you are having your heels bitten.

Average across the country shows one thing in a few sectors.

Experience out there in the field shows different.

For example, try telling public sector workers they can't complain, as actual pay rises are running at 2.5% on average in the UK.

Try telling those council workers being dismissed and rehired under worse pay that it's ok, as the total claiming job seekers benefits fell by a few hundred last month.

Averages are fine, in context. And the context you were using, which you have been picked up on, is more forum politics than anything else - IMO.

The grass can always be greener than reality - if thats how you want to see it.
