Also as an aside - I had put an ad on Freecycle to ask if I could borrow an XP pc and got a reply from someone who said that he works for a charity that repairs pc's for those in need. He said he would lend me a pc and then take my pc away to fix it. This sounds too good to be true...could it be a scam or am I too suspicious?

    Thanks

Don't see your models listed here. Perhaps you should get to work on your XP machine. :)

Thanks - I hadn't seen that page. TheDSS Player Version 7 (7.4.1) apparently recognises the DS3000, but not sure if the foot pedal would work with it, but the main thing is getting the files onto the computer. I'll investigate further!

With the XP machine is the CMOS battery easy to replace?

Thanks. I'll go and buy the battery now, and let you know how it goes.

New CMOS battery hasn't made any difference. Nothing is loading up at all. Monitor is not detecting a signal.

So, where are we now? Can you boot in to the BIOS screen or Safe Mode?

Packard Bell users, you can access the BIOS set up by pressing the F1, F2 or DEL keys just after restarting the computer

Safe Mode screen is usually F8. You have to tap this just as the PC is restarting.

The screen just says 'no input signal' and switches itself off. The tower starts up OK but nothing going through to the screen. Tried the F buttons but no joy.
