    hi all,
my daughter has asked for a princess castle cake for her birthday does anyone have any tips for me? I so far had the idea of using a square cake for a base with either a smaller square or round cake on top and then the ice cream cones to make the top of the turrets but no idea what to use for the actual turrets themselves!
if anyone has made one of these already then i'd love to see a picture :)

I have made one on this link http://wokinghamcakes.co.uk/our-cake-gallery/category/12-childrens-birthday-cakes

    phoca_thumb_l_princess%20castle%

I did a 10 inch round, for the turrets I wrapped modelling paste around kitchen roll until it had dried, removed the kitchen roll then covered the cones with modelling paste and stuck them on. If you want more detailed instructions pm me. Thanks:)

Hi everyone, have just bought lots of modelling tools off ebay as well as some gel colourings and other bit and bobs to try and get started experimenting. Just wondering, when making things like roses do you just use normal sugarpaste like you would use to cover a cake or is it something else? Thanks

To make flowers and models, you need to and CMC to your sugarpaste to make it firmer, and easier to work with. You can get it in sugar craft shops, or online. It's also known as Tylo or Tylose powder
  • Hi,
I love making cakes but no where near as good as most on here,

Can i ask what you use to top the Cupcakes with--is it just butter icing? as it looks so creamy mine,s never that smooth, and how you get them to look like a perfect flower?

Also-last question:o--how do you get the rainbow colours? all the cakes on here are amazing--i,m just hungry now looking at them :rotfl:

Or you can buy flower paste. I would recommend 'platinum paste', I find it the easiest to work with.

Yes its buttercream (usually) although I've recently tried some nice cream cheese frosting recipes too.

The most important bit when making buttercream is beating it well. i couldn't make decent buttercream (especially for piping) without either a free standing mixer (eg. kenwood chef) of an electric hand mixer.

I also think sieving the icing sugar ....even though it is a pain (especially with my sieve) is essential.

I've left it too late now to order an embossing mat off Ebay ......just wondering if I could use something else to emboss the sugarpaste on the sides of the cake with ?. Making a carrot cake for grandaughter and I have bought some orange sugarpaste to roll out and wrap the side of the cake with and hopefully do green grass (cream cheese frosting) for the top and I've bought the sugarpaste carrots to put on top. Still unsure what shade of green I should go with...dark green or green.

Just been reading the other thread with interest ........just bought apricot jam with the intention of brushing on sides of cake before applying the sugarpaste, will this be okay or should I be using the cream cheese frosting underneath it ?

I'd go with the green. And you could try the apricot jam, I've never used it for anything other than marzipaning a fruit cake, Buttercream is supposed to be used for sticking sugarpaste to spong type cakes, you only need a very thin scraping though or you get a rubbish finish as its all squishy....here speaks the voice of experience!!!

i usually makes the turrets from swiss rolls - i have used empty tubes as suggested by someone else, but the disappointed face on DD when she grabbed them thinking it was cake, made me change lol
