I am so pleased I've found this thread!
All your cakes are wonderful, I am an experienced baker but I've never really bothered with decorations and stuff, I'm an Aunt Bessies frosting and sprinkles sort of girl.
One of my best friends turns 40 in a few weeks and we're throwing him a party and I've sort of volunteered myself to make the cake. I'm hoping to do a two tier cake, one with a golf theme and the top with a lorry on. I'm based in West Yorkshire, does anyone have any tips of where I can get toppers etc from around here? I've found some places online but I was hoping to go to a shop if possible to make sure that they are the right size etc.
Also, should I ice the two tiers separately or just put the sugarpaste over the whole thing?

Hope you can help, I'm panicking a little bit!

  • Hi there
Yes you would need to ice them seperately, if you search online you will find videos/ guides on how to asseble cakes. I know there is a good one on the bbcgood food website, just search for wedding cake it should come up.

Re toppers, theye are cheaper online. Most suppliers will tell you the measurements. You ould also try yellow pages to find local sugarcraft suppliers in your area. Good luck and if you need more help do not hesitate to pm me:)

really? I do a lot of modelling and have never had a proplem. Do you add CMC wher you do your models? My models go rock hard overnight and I sell them online- they even survive postage.

No, I never have but have only just started doing modelling. Does CMC stand for something? Do you just need to knead it into the sugar paste? Are the models still edible with it added?

I'm doing a 40th wedding anniversary cake for this weekend for MIL and FIL. I'll try to remember to post some pics.

iya, colour a small amount to start with to a few shades daker than you want it to end up, and then mix into the rest of the sugarpaste.

Sorry to hear you've not been well. I hope you're on the mend now.
I don't bother colouring large amounts of sugarpaste, as it's so hard to get it even, and it's blimmin hard work, all that kneading. I colour small amounts with sugar flair paste colours, nut large amount, I buy readymade
  • Thanks Annie and Superwoman
Annie I usualy buy it ready coloured however my usual supplier doesnt do mint green and said regal ice have stopped doing it as they are bringing new colours in. The mearest they do is teal have looled online but postage is to high.
