    Hi all!!

Firstly, this is my first thread in this area - I'm kinda new to the cake thing. Well, I can bake a good cake, but I'm new to the decorating bit....

    I'm looking for a couple of bits of advice. Next weekend I'm making my first proper birthday cake for my daughter - she adores Minnie Mouse, but I can't find one in the supermarkets so am attempting to make one. I have a design in mind, but there's just a couple of pointers I need;
    • I have a square base for the cake to sit on, but I want the base to be iced. I'm using roll out icing - do I literally lay the icing on the silver base? Or do I use something to "stick" it? It might seem like a stupid question, but I don't want to screw it up!
    • I'm using white ready-roll icing for the main cake - I use buttercream to attach this to the cake, yes?
    • Do you guys have any madeira cake recipe suggestions? The ones I've found online have a tendency to vary rather a lot. Is there a specific preferred one?
Thanks :) If I manage to succeed, I shall post pictures!

Oh, and secondly - my god, the designs you guys make are freaking amazing!! I am totally in awe of your talent! :D

Mimmie, You could bake a square chocolate cake, buttercream it then get a topper made , you can send someone a picture of what you want and it could be printed onto icing, you just peel and stick

Daisy jean, you can use water or edible glue, if you want the board the same colour as the board you can ice all in one after crumb coating. YouTube is great for tutorials if your not sure

    Hi all,
Wanted to share my wedding cake. It was my first ever three tier cake. Madeira, chocolate and red velvet. I was really pleased with how it came out.

    Hi everyone,

I'm making a monkey themed cake for a family member, going with the monkey theme I'm thinking chocolate cake and banana flavoured icing. Should I do banana icing in the layers and all over (piped as "grass") or just in the layers and the "grass" vanilla?

    Thanks everyone x

    Quick query...

I have made my daughter's cake, and fondant iced it on a 12" square board. It looks okay, not bad for a first attempt.

However, her party isn't until Sunday... I hadn't meant to make it so soon, but got a little carried away. And now I'm panicking about how the heck I'm going to store it.

I haven't got a box big enough - would wrapping it in greaseproof, then foil be sufficient? Or am I going to need a whole new cake by Sunday? :o

If the cake is covered in fondant then it kind of seals the sponge in an almost airtight way. Don't put it in the fridge or a sealed container as fondant doesn't like moisture and it will sweat.
Covering with foil loosely to keep dust of should be fine.
