Kev i used flour and v soft butter for silicone mould and came out a treat. Agree with nat on method for ice cream cupcakes, in fact prob got it from here in the first place. best tip i had was to poke a couple of holes with cocktail stick in bottom of cone before you put them on wire rack to cool. this stops cones going soft. and no they dont burn in oven, i was really surprised too.
Thanks all for kind comments, always more flattering from other bakers.
Vfm- the big cakes did take a while. About 7 hours for the footie one and probably nearer 30 for the sofa. thats why i dont understand how anyone makes money at it! Guess u get quicker the more you do. trying to be more organised as orders from friends coming in now. can anyone recommend website for cake boards and boxes? Keep looking but difficult to make comparisons then i get distracted by more interesting things to buy!!
:wall:Trying to get a grip

Love all the cakes and cupcakes! I just have a question about the cupcake cases. Is the size between the normal fairy cakes and muffin cases? And where do you get them from? I can't seem to find a decent size case. Thanks

    Hi tealeaves,

I get mine from a local cookshop here in Norwich but the brand I always use is culprit. They're really good quality thick cases and come in loads of designs. Not many places online list what brand their cases are but it's usually easy to spot Culprit ones as they come in packs of 54. Lakeland also carry some of them but not all of their range is Culprit!

These fill a cup in a muffin tray nicely and I think are just the right size.

One type to avoid like the plague is Lakeland plain white cases. Probably the only thing I've ever had from Lakeland that I thought was rubbish. Really really thin, a pain in the butt to separate and they get greasy and become see through because they are so thin. They're also too big for what I like really.

    HTH

Thanks Nat! Do the cones not burn when you bake them?

Do you just butter and flour your giant cupcake mould before you put the cake mix in?

    Hi Kevie,

I have a silicone giant cupcake mould and have never had any problems with it. I just grease mine with butter (well, stork) and flour. Always turns out fine.

    Thanks ladies :)

Think I might have to have a play with a giant cupcake on Saturday to see what I come up with... I've only ever made 2 before and that was ages ago!

What recipe do people use for theirs? I was thinking a standard 6 egg (12oz each of sr flour, stork and sugar) but then I thought maybe a Madeira would be better?

    12oz/345g selfraising flour
    12oz/345g butter/marg
    12oz/345g sugar
    4 large eggs
    2 tsps baking powder
(2 heaped tblsp cocoa powderif doing chocolate version)

    preheat oven to gas 3/160c
    well grease both moulds
beat sugar and butter together until light and fluffy
add eggs one at a time mixing well between each
fold in flour and baking powder (and cocoa powder)
transfer mix to moulds on put in oven, the top should cook in approx 50 mins and the bottom approw 15-20 mins longer, however keep a close eye on them both as ovens can vary
allow to cool for at least half an hour (longer if you can wait that long)
level both layers off with a bread knife to ensure a more stable cake
I put mine in the freezer for twenty mins before assembling and decorating to help set the butter icing

Above is what I used on Sunday to make my giant cupcake, someone had kindly posted it when they reviewed the silicone cupcake mould on Amazon. Mixture amount was perfect :)

Notice you're not too far from me Kevie, I'm half an hour from Norwich just into the Suffolk border!!

Dragonflyjen - I made my first wedding cake a few weeks ago, its on page 109 post number 2176. The only advice I can give is use lots of dowells. I was really worried about them collapsing too as they were really heavy separately and I couldnt lift them at all when they were stacked.

Also, I wouldnt assemble them until they get to where they need to be. We transported them separately and stacked them at the venue. HTH

Monkeymagic - I love love love the ice-cream cones and stand! I hope you dont mind but I am so going to pinch that idea :rotfl:

I did some ice-cream cones a while back.....

I will eventually get around to uploading my own wedding cake one day. It was very boring to be honest as I just couldnt be bothered . I wasnt that bothered really, I just used the 'pregnant with twins' card and nobody said anything :rotfl:

Hi ladies! Well my ds's party is this weekend and after numerous rehearsal attempts I will be attempting the real thing! Eek! Just some advice as to when I should do it! His party is Sunday so was looking at baking cake and cupcakes friday and icing Saturday but just worried I may need more time! Its mainly buttercream icing as he is not a fan of sugarpaste so when do you think I should bake/decorate? Thanks ladies you all do so wonderfully I am really jealous but slowly getting into this cake making!

Thanks Bobbis Mummy, that's really helpful! *waves* it's nice to know there are people near me into making cakes :) have you done any courses or anything? I'm struggling to find good sugarcraft ones in our area :(

Whilst I'm at it, I wondered if anyone has a recommendation for where to buy sugarpaste online? I've seen some on eBay but wanted a recommendation in case the quality isn't that good!

No, no courses and I only tend to decorate cakes for little ones birthdays so that's only 2 a year!! now getting into decorating cupcakes though.

As you will see when I post pics of cakes I'm doing for the weekend - I'm no expert!!

I know not online but have you tired the cake craft centre at sweetbriat estate?? seemed to have a lot of choice there not sure what they're like price wise though
