Ooh, I remember going to that place with my mum when I was younger! Not been there in years though because I don't drive and I don't think any buses run that way...
I buy a lot of my cake stuff from Loose's Cookshop in Norwich but their sugarpaste is quite expensive.
Might just have to get some white from Tesco and colour myself...0 -
Thanks ladies
Think I might have to have a play with a giant cupcake on Saturday to see what I come up with... I've only ever made 2 before and that was ages ago!
What recipe do people use for theirs? I was thinking a standard 6 egg (12oz each of sr flour, stork and sugar) but then I thought maybe a Madeira would be better?
Kevin
350g butter
350g sugar
350g SR Flour
175g Plain Flour
6 Eggs
Cream butter and sugar
Add eggs one at a time with a spoonful of flour
Fold in rest of flour
This gave me a perfect quantity of batter!0 -

Dragonflyjen - I made my first wedding cake a few weeks ago, its on page 109 post number 2176. The only advice I can give is use lots of dowells. I was really worried about them collapsing too as they were really heavy separately and I couldnt lift them at all when they were stacked.
Also, I wouldnt assemble them until they get to where they need to be. We transported them separately and stacked them at the venue. HTH
Hello Cake4brains (love the username!),I've just taken a peek at the wedding cake you did and it's beautiful. Can I ask what size tins you used please?I have an order for a tiered cake to cater for 150 people and I'm still trying to work out whether I should go for a 12" base or 14".Are you a first time mummy?Twins blimey, good luck, double trouble but twice the fun!:rotfl::female:Our 2 gorgeous little girls born 2006 and 2010

Hi Twinkles sorry to butt in but according to the experts at my cake decorating shop 12" is the largest you should safely cook in a domestic oven. If u look at the portion guide on the "sweet success" website it'll help too:) xThe secret of Christmas

Nanamia, thank you, your post confirmed my suspicions.12" it is then!!Thanks for the portion size advice too.I've looked in my cake decorating folder and on a few websites and they all say slightly different numbers based on the portion of cake cut.I think it's around the 2" by 2 ".I may be overthinking this though as I am used to doing much smaller birthday cakes.I'm up for the challenge though!Off to look at the website-thanks x:female:Our 2 gorgeous little girls born 2006 and 2010

Remember that you will get more portions from a fruit cake than a sponge, if you're doing a fruit tier, as they are 1"x1" portions xxx0

bobbis mummy i would suggest a layer of buttercream to help icing stick to bottom of giant cupcake. put the buttercream on and try and get as smooth as poss then pop it in fridge for a while before icing, though i am no expert.
Busy couple weeks for me. cake comp entry:
ds 10th birthday
and fil's 70th
You will have to excuse my character modelling as these were 1st attempts. my poor son was a bit wonky and wobbly on top of that football!!

Evening everyone!
I've been lurking in this thread for a few months. You see, it was my DD first Birthday on Monday and I was desperate to make her a lovely cake, something that she could look back at photos of when she's older and think 'Wow'. The problem was that I'm not so good in the kitchen and my cakes in the past haven't risen and been very heavy. Plus I'd never tried to decorate a cake in any way other than slicing it and sticking some jam in the middle!!!
Anyway reading all your posts and looking at the pictures of your beautiful cakes gave me confidence that I could have a good crack at it - Thank you all for sharing
With the help of an amazing book my mum found in a charity shop, 3 weeks practicing and my cake-loving DH to eat all my early attempts, I produced this for my DD's Birthday - Hoorah!!!
Thanks for inspiring me! :T0
