I've been lurking in this thread for a few months. You see, it was my DD first Birthday on Monday and I was desperate to make her a lovely cake, something that she could look back at photos of when she's older and think 'Wow'. The problem was that I'm not so good in the kitchen and my cakes in the past haven't risen and been very heavy. Plus I'd never tried to decorate a cake in any way other than slicing it and sticking some jam in the middle!!!
Anyway reading all your posts and looking at the pictures of your beautiful cakes gave me confidence that I could have a good crack at it - Thank you all for sharing
With the help of an amazing book my mum found in a charity shop, 3 weeks practicing and my cake-loving DH to eat all my early attempts, I produced this for my DD's Birthday - Hoorah!!!
Thanks for inspiring me! :T
One word..........................WOW!!:T:T:T0 -

hope that works as i am on phone. i didnt print the template tho think that would be a good idea as i had trouble with proportions. i also used a mould for face as i am not v artistic.
The couch was lovely lindys choc fudge cake which started out as 8 inch square. i cut in half and buttercreamed then cut a square from the top so it looked like an 'n'. That gave me 2 arms and a low back then i used the spare bit to build up the back with some spaghetti to strengthen. then just used sharp knife to shape and round off. DH said back looked like pair of boobs! I was dreading covering with sugarpaste so tried to do as much shaping as poss with the cake rather than with icing. family were pleased with it as its a replica of their couch with the board covered in same colour as their carpet.:wall:Trying to get a grip :think:0 -
Squeeky that is really cool. your obviously a natural, well done!:wall:Trying to get a grip :think:0

Twinkles what a beautiful cake. I've not used the rice krispes thingies for support so I'll be interested to see how you get on:)
DGD2 is being christened at the end of the month and I've volunteered to do the catering. Only a small close family gathering so only for 25 the last one I did was for 200 (I secretly loved every minute of it) This time I'm really keen to have as much prepared as pos (those that kno me will never believe I've said that) so any ideas will be really appreciated. Nanamia, The book is called 'The essential guide to cake decorating'. I've found it here on amazon if you're interested. It really had everything I needed to know in it and was pitched at just the right level for someone who had no clue!!!0 -
