Your results are so professional, and I love the attention to detail (esp he newspaper!). How long did the decor for each take?Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Loving those cakes Monkeymagic... I really must get more into making big cakes! I also love the ice cream cupcakes... Did you bake the cake in the cones somehow?
I just wanted to ask a quick question to everyone - which giant cupcake tin do you use? I have the silicone one from the works but I don't like it... I really don't get on with any silicone bakeware! Does anyone use a metal one and, if so, which one? They all seem quite expensive?

Kevin,
I just sold my big metal Wilton one and bought a silicon one! I don't like silicone either but like the fact that you can remove the parts individually from the oven if one is ready before the other and I like the part that creates the dip so you can add filling to it.
For the cones, line the tin holes with foil, put the cones in the holes the use the foil to hold them in place (that's how I do it anyway!).

How was the carrot cake VhM?
. To start with, it tasted bitter - I put that down to the freshly squeezed orange juice and not nat's recipe - and was soggy (again because of the syrup I guess) although strangely not very sweet at all. I only syruped it because the base felt a bit hard - almost like a rock-bun texture - but I guess the cake would have been bearable if it were not for that.
It's in the bin now and my confidence is shattered.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Thanks Nat! Do the cones not burn when you bake them?
Do you just butter and flour your giant cupcake mould before you put the cake mix in?0 -

Oh no! It's so horrible when something happens to knock your confidence. Best thing to do is dust yourself down and get right back into it. I know what it feels like after my cake-tastrophe a couple of months back.
Kevin - I use cake release but lots of people use flour and butter to grease.

I used a silicone mould yesterday for my giant cupcake, I used 1 cal spray then used my pastry brush to make sure all surfaces covered then floured it. Was worried it would stick as have had disasters before with silicone but it dropped right out after I'd left it to cool for half an hour0 -
Hmm, I have some homemade stuff that is suppose to be a substitute for cake release made from flour, Trex and veg oil. Works really well as non stick but unfortunately I don't like how the cakes turn out.. They seem to have hard edges and bulge up around the outside where it rises and just slides up the tin rather than being stuck there because of the friction!
Hmm, maybe I should try some 'real' cake release....0
