Has anyone made the Hummingbird Red Velvet Cupcakes...thinking about making some tomorrow. Recipe states 40ml of Dr.Oetker red food colouring...the btls are 38ml do you think I will get away with just using that. Also the bottle I bought is Dr Oetker Natural Red colouring do you think there is any difference between that and red !
Definitely need the artificial red although I have to say I made the hummingbird ones and I really didn't like them. I'd not had red velvet before so not sure if they were supposed to taste like that but i won't be makin them again.0 -

I thought of black forest gateau and a quick google came up with these. I haven't tried them but they do sound yummy.
The same site has these which have alcohol in the icing.0 -
Ladies, I want to buy some colouring for my buttercream, but I'm confused. Is gel or paste best?I bought a pot of sk proffessional paste- is that okay for icing?
I want a little selection of colours - which colours/brands are your favourites?July Win: Nokia 58000 -
Gel paste is the best, as it doesn't alter the consistency of icing. It's great for buttercream too. SK colours are great. I use sugarflair, because it's the brand my local shop stocks. I have quite a good selection now. If you want to buy a set all in one go, the PartyAnimalOnline do good offers on eBay.0

I use paste, that also doesnt alter the consistency as its very concentrated, and you only need a tiny amount.
all mine are sugarflair paste colours....i have quite a collection now though ha ha

Hi again, I'm just wondering if anyone could answer a few questions for me?
I've picked my first project to trial (basic round cake, covered with icing and then with different coloured polka dots. I hope to be able to make a topper at some point, but one step at a time!).
First question is i have a round tin, but its not a loose bottom - will this be ok if I line it?
Also, would you cut in half and buttercream the sponge?!
And finally, how do you colour icing, or is it easier to buy ready coloured?
Thank you if you've read all that!!

hi tootoo, none of my tins are loose bottom...you just never seem to get a clean shape with a loose one.
yeah i cut mine and either fill with jam or buttercream etc
depending on what colour you want...pastel colours i would colour myself but if you wanted a really concentrated colour thats hard to get with paste id get it pre coloured.
