Thanks Golden anemone and nanamia! Well the curse of the baker baking their own cake struck again tonight, so I give up!! Was supposed to be taking the cake to work tomorrow as not many people are in on Friday when its my actual birthday, so Im gonna take my time over the weekend and take it on Monday instead. Think I've just been trying to do too much in such a short space of time. So, watch this space.........
You're so very special, I wish I was special

Oh no Moosetasic. Still you'll have time to enjoy doing it and not rushing and throwing it together :-) I could only happen on your own cake couldn't it:( Still don't know about you but if I'm tired and grumpy I make mistakes- then I'm cross with myself for doing it when I'm tired and grumpy! I've been catching up on thread 1 today whilst it's been quiet on here. Wow there are some very talented people on there. Inspirational and full of tips so thank you Golden Anemone :-)

    Hi all,

Thanks for your responses on the sugarpaste... Red Extra it is!

I do have a final question though... Does everyone here use all unsalted butter in their buttercream? Does anyone use stork?

I'm thinking of using half butter, half stork and see how it turns out? Stork is so much cheaper!

I only ever use stork, actually that's a lie, I use the supermarket's own version, Morrisons' is 50p a block. I have tried the 50% trex thing and thought it was revolting!!!

If you find the yellow colour too much when using butter or marg there are 2 ways of reducing it. firstly, beat it for longer, which has the added bonus of giving you a much lighter buttercream too. or secondly, sugarflair make a powder colour called 'white extra' some of this added to buttercream really does lighten it significantly.

i use the 50% trex and 50% lurpak and get great results, everyone seems to love it and it goes a lovely white colour, works out a bit pricy though

Right, here goes. I promised pics of my first ones, good or bad. Here they are. I tried the trex/butter option, little bit too soft, so maybe a wee bit less milk next time.

Hi All, Just had a read through a load of pages and am loving all your amazing creations. I get all excited about making cakes, but I don't think they look as pretty as I hope, (although they certainly taste good!) I just don't seem to have a very artistic flair.

It's my Mum's 70th birthday on Friday and I have made a fruit cake and have iced it but don't know how to decorate it? Have looked on you tube etc to get ideas on how to do writing icing, but I dont think I can pull it off neatly enough. Nat, how did you do the writing on this cake? Is it sugarpaste? It looks great. My idea so far for writing is to print off a nice font with Happy 70th Birthday Mum and trace it onto greaseproof paper, go over it gently with a toothpick to make a slight indentation and then pipe icing over the guidelines..... does that sound like it might work? I plan to play around with some left over icing tomorrow.

Any suggestions on how to decorate it in a simple yet elegant way are very welcome xx

Just done this '1' cake this week. It's the first cake that somebody has 'ordered' from me. I was so nervous doing it but it turned out fine!

  • Hiya ladies! Is there a recipe you could recommend for a moist vanilla sponge cake cos I don't have time for a trial and error? :( The birthday party for my colleagues is this coming saturday and I'm desperate to make a nice Burger cake for them. I know it is a basic cake but tbh, I never baked one before. Please help! Thank you so much in advance. xxx

Mamamoi - I used Tappits for the letters. Added some Tylo to sugarpaste and rolled out really thinly. I bought the letter stencils from E-bay.

Makeyourmummyproud - This is the recipe I use for moist vanilla cake. It's really easy to make and tastes delicious.
