Home-made cakes thread 2

Hi everyone - I've been a long time watcher of this thread .. and i've posted a couple of questions, but never posted anything that i've made...
Sooo.. thought i'd share my mothers day cupcakes with you that I made for my wonderful mum
I do however.. need to work on my piping skills - I feel that I rushed them and didn't finish them off nicely
I also this weekend made a lemon drizzle cake.. however the middle of my cake sunkI can think of a few reasons to perhaps why... It was quite a large mixture, so my tin may have been too small... and perhaps I didn't bake it long enough before I took it out of the oven, as... when putting it back in for a little while longer it was perfect! And despite the hole like the grand canyon.. it was DELICIOUS!
Any other idea's as to why my cake sunk???
Hope all you mum's had a lovely mothers day! I know I sure did with my little princess0 -
Thanks Kevin!
I made the leaves and the shamrocks. Used green candy melts and bought the moulds.0 -
Well they look excellent so well done
What are candy melts like to work with? I imagine they are easier to get a good result with than chocolate because of tempering etc? And what do they taste like?0 -
The first ones I ever used were the ones with the coloured bits through them and they were terrible. I used them for cake pops and ended up having to add some milk to thin them to the right consistency. I ended up using the Silver Spoon orange and strawberry buttons instead so I was a bit reluctant to use try them again as they are so expensive. They worked a treat this time. Melted them in the microwave and put them in the moulds and into the fridge. They hardened up quicker than the Silver Spoon ones and came out the mould no problem. I made little roses out of the silver spoon buttons but they were quite sticky still once they'd dried so I didn't use them. The candy melts gave a neater finish too.
I never tasted these ones as I've given up chocolate for lent and figured that they fell into the chocolate category but everyone else that had some enjoyed them. Most of them are vanilla flavoured.0 -
Oooo I just happened upon this thread and I love it! So much inspiration! I'm going to have to go back and trawl through all the older posts.
I'm hoping some of you talented folks can help me with a ganache problem - I'm doing a cake for an event this weekend and want to do a nice shiny ganache to cover it. The cake will be 9" round and approximately 5" high...any ideas about how much ganache I'll need?Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -
So, in the process of making my own cake for work. Last night I made my first ever figure, a sophisticated Hello Kitty!! Perfect for a soon to be 39 year old!! :rotfl:
I just need to get rid of the icing sugar on the sugarpaste but here she is -
But then, tonight, DISASTER!!!!! First, my wonderful new Breville mixer that my OH bought me for Xmas has just broke, the metal on the beaters have just sheared right off!! Then, I can only find one bit of the metal, not two, so I dont know if its in the cake or not!!!
But then, just to prove that things happen in threes, I was getting the cake out of the tin and it fell apart in my hands and went all over the floor!!! I am seriously jinxed tonight! You're so very special, I wish I was special :dance:0 -
The figure is fantastic moosetastic but sorry for your bad luck otherwise. Hugs.0

Fab cupcakes Kev, Nat, Bindiboo and Kirstysmudge :-) ooh Nat you are good using the chocolate but not tasting any! Candy melts IMHO are much nicer tasting than the silver spoon ones. Nat if you need to thin them a little for cake pops use a touch of vegetable oil ( kno sounds disgusting but works a treat)
Glad you tried the half trex half butter Kev ( still not brave enough hoping this week to "try harder")
Hope there is nobody I've missed. Were the mums all delighted with their cupcakes?
Sorry Moosetastic your figure is lovely :-)The secret of Christmas
