Yeh u can add it. It makes the figures harden, I prefer using sugarpaste without but think that's just preference. Have fun with it can't wait to c the finished cake:-)

    Hi all,

I have a quick question for you lovely people...

I want to make some chilli and chocolate cupcakes and thought I would decorate with some little sugar paste chillies. So, I have a silicone mould which makes little chillies about 2cm long but it's just occurred to me that I have no idea what to use to make them...

Do I just use ordinary sugarpaste? If so, is it cheaper (and less hassle) for me to buy two small packs of coloured or one pack of white and some colours?

    Thanks,

    Kevin

Hi Kevin, yes use sugar paste and dust the mould well with cornflour first of you'll never get them out. As a one off it's probably cheapest to buy the ready coloured sugar paste but if you will use the colours again then in the long run that would probably be the cheapest option. If you want a good red colour then I'd recommend buying sugarflair 'Red Extra' as you'll struggle to get a decent red colour with anything else and who wants pink chillies?!

I'd second that about the Red Extra Kevin. It's a bit more expensive than the others but it's a bigger pot and you do need it to make proper red.

Nanamia - thank you for your faith in me!!! I'm really nervous but will be so pleased if it works! I need the figures to stand up around the cake 'huddling' each other (it's a Celtic football club cake and the team all do a huddle before each game) so was thinking about getting a cake dummie to put them on when I've finished so that they dry in the correct position???

Nat that's a good idea using a dummie for drying. It's gonna be handy that they go into a "huddle" they could lean against each other for support. Transporting it might be tricky hope you've not got to go far. Have a little "play" did you find anything suitable on YouTube?

I used to put off starting figures thinking it was gonna be much harder than it actually is. Leave yourself plenty of time and have a go. I'm sure you've got bits of coloured sugar paste around that you could experiment with. Give it a go, what have you got to loose?

I agree with the others Kevin if you are buying colours go for the extra red. If you don't think you will be using the colours again buy a small packet of coloured sugar paste - about £1.70 for 250g.

I won't be transporting it anywhere thankfully! It will just be staying at home! I'm just a bit worried about making 11 of them! In an ideal world I'd be able to make them and put them straight onto the cake. I'm worried they break when I try to move them from the dummy. I might have to do an all nighter to get it done!!!

    Hi Bindi

Your figure is fab did you rloow a tutorial I have been putting off making figures for about a year to chicken to try but would love to have a go

    Annie

Could I ask how do you wrap the cicing in cling film when outting it in your piping bag? I use disposable bags and have to change to different bags when changing colours which is a waste, your idea sounds ideal

    Thanks
