re: sipgateIn a normal conversation, the data volumes reach approximately 100 kbit/s
Interesting as I don't have Windows to run the 1899 software.
Standard ADSL = 512down, 256up which is not enough for the 100kbits quoted. 1mb cable from telewest is worse at 1mbit/128kbit.
Furthermore, you need bandwidth management to make the connection reliable. Easy in thoery but as I'm finding out this is very hard to actually get working.Order of events: Banks lose our money -> get bailed out -> were inflating GBP to cover it -> now taxing us -> next will grab your funds direct -> things get really desperate to balance the books. What should have happened?: banks go bust and we lost our money much quicker0 -

Hmm. Not convinced. You only need bandwidth management if you're doing something else on the line at the same time. i.e. if you're about to make a call, stop downloading, close eMule, and quit bittorrent...
I've used various flavours of VoIP (Skype, SIP, IAX, Nortel MCS) on a NTL line (768k down, 256k I think up) for the last year with no issues. The only time I get problems is if I've forgotton to stop a download, or if Outlook decided to go drag down a big attachment.
I'm planning to build a linux router to provide BWM, as well as giving me an asterix server on the internet to connect to these services without NAT. I understand there is a Linksys WAP device you can load with custom linux firmware to do BWM as well, although I've not followed this up.0 -

Wish I had gone for the linksys. Instead I chose the Asus WL500g because it has a printer and USB port. Unfortunately the WLAN port on it didn't seem to work, and access to it is out of bounds as far as I can see to the OS (it gets bunched with the other LAN ports as eth0 which then get bridged to eth2)

Good luck with your bandwidth endevours!Order of events: Banks lose our money -> get bailed out -> were inflating GBP to cover it -> now taxing us -> next will grab your funds direct -> things get really desperate to balance the books. The 1899 software just doesn't work with my setup. However, I've got firefly calling out using 1899 and also got x-lite receiving calls through sipgate. I've also got firefly both making and receiving calls (I think). I can also get x-lite to make calls through 1899 and receive calls through sipgate, but when I make a call through 1899 I can hear the "0p per minute" message, and ringing, but nothing after that. The other end can hear me though. Is there a problem with x-lite? Does anyone know a fix?
Many thanks for the advice so far.0 -
I can make outgoing calls on 1899 from my pc using Firefly IAX.1899.com but can't get sip to work - I get an error 408, no network. Could it be that my broadband router is blocking sip but not IAX. I have started to look at "port forwarding" on my Netgear router if that is the problem.0

I am using Skype at the moment which works but would like to use the 1899 service of free calls to UK landlines including free connection.
I have downloaded the 1899 software but not yet installed it, anyone had experience of clashes.
I use a VOIP USB phone but used headset before getting the phone.0 -

I'm using Firefly softfone with USB handset, configured for 1899 outbound and SIPGate inbound, with XP SP2. Works a treat.

The newer version of the softphone window says "ready to make calls / ready to receive calls".
How can I receive calls on my pc when one of the registered numbers is my BT line ?
I am trying to work out how to receive calls to my sipgate "local" number that is also registered with 1899, but haven't succeeded yet with Firefly
