Yes, if you use these PC software programmes then the PC does have to be on 24/7 to be able to make / receive calls 24/7. If the PC is switched off then it is impossible to be running the software and therefore impossible to make and receive calls, this doesn't mean you can't use the service at all, just not 24/7 unless PC is on 24/7.

It is possible to buy hardware, either a VoIP phone or an adaptor that allows you to connect a standard phone.

This will allow you to make and receive calls without the PC switched on.

Though you will either need to have a router, or your broadband modem is connected by way of Ethernet.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

It works fine if you are in UK, outside Uk it doesn't connect.

May be they are using IP filter?
All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy.

So if I take the computer to Italy and try to connect the iax 1899 soft phone to dial a UK landline it will not connect??

Does this mean I will have to use Skype and pay (admittedly not much) for the call? Does anyone know any VOIP alternatives to Skype that I can use while travelling abroad??

If it does need a uk ip, which I don't think it would, you can just use a proxy server

Can anyone recommend a stand alone voip phone (or adapter) that is easy to set up to receive calls on a sipgate number and make calls via 1899?

Also preferably doesn't cost an arm and a leg!

http://www.stayinvisible.com/index.pl/proxy_list has a list of proxies.

Most browsers have a Tools - Proxy option, where you can add a number of proxies you can then easily choose to use.

Internet Explorer is more awkward, you have to go to Tools - Internet Options - Connections, and then either settings or LAN settings depending on connection type, there you can then enter proxy details.

I don't have a phone number to register to use the VoIP.

    What can I do?
Order of events: Banks lose our money -> get bailed out -> were inflating GBP to cover it -> now taxing us -> next will grab your funds direct -> things get really desperate to balance the books. What should have happened?: banks go bust and we lost our money much quicker

Does not need a UK IP. I have just been using it from the US through the broadband connection supplied by my hotel which is part of a Canadian chain and has a Canadian IP address (this was clear as even Google defaulted to the Candian website). Used 1899 through both Firefly and X-Lite and it worked a treat.
