its me again! (I just answered the stardrops/windows question, though maybe not very helpful!)

White vinegar is used instead of fabric conditioner. It cleans all the soap suds from the wash and keeps the washing machine drum etc limescale free. I put mine in the conditioner part of the drawer, I use the same amount that I would use of conditioner. It works the same way for dishwashers I should think (I dont have one) in that it keeps the machine limescale free and fresh.

    lots more laundry info here

and there's no such thing as a silly question, if we don't ask we don't learn! ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

saw on here the other day a lady saying she uses white vinger in washing machine and dishwasher once a month to keep it clean how do u use this ? jst empty some in dishwasher ? and what about washing machine do i put in drum or drawer ?
    sorry about silly questions

You can put it in the fabric softener container and run a wash on 60 degrees to keep your washing machine smelling fresh and keeps the limescale down.

For the dishwasher, I actually put it in a container without a lid in the actual tray to clean mine. It can also be used as a replacement for rinse aid - add in the usual place.

As rosieben says, you can also use it in place of fabric conditioner within the wash too.

  • Here's a really dumb question - where in the supermarket does this white vinegar sit? I had a look the other day in the vinegar section and that only has all the fancy 'eating' vinegars!

If you have access to a Chinese or Oriental supermarket white vinegar is sold in 5 litre plastic containers much cheaper than usual supermarkets.
  • Hi, in Morrisons and ASdA it's next to the malt vinegar. I think you can use malt as well.

All I could find in the shops near me was Sarson's distilled malt vinegar. This thread suggests that IS white vinegar (?!). My washing machine is an integrated 6 year old (ex rental flat) machine and AFAIK has never been run on a very hot cycle in its entire life. It's now started (despite constant cleaning of the filter) not spinning the clothes dry enough and it looks a bit manky. I can't afford to replace it though. It's a de Dietrich and they don't do repairs either.

Do you think I should use that distilled malt vinegar at 95 degs in the fabric conditioner section; or would bicarb or something be better? Or should I first shock it with 60 degs? I'm in a hard water area so there will have been substantial limescale build up. The machine is run about 2 - 3x a week, not more.
I've been eyeing the vinegar sitting on top of the machine since I bought it, but am too scared in case I do the wrong thing.
  • i got white vinger and have been using it to clean and its came up well but the only thing is my house sticks of vinegar!!!

i put that disinfecting oil in it which u all talk about (the flowery one only 80p in a clear bottle and its yellow- the scent is bouqet) but i can still smell it!!!

    am i bein stupid?

I mix mine with water and use it for cleaning glass etc and have found that it doesn't leave a strong smell. Not used it neat for cleaning.
