  • I have used white vinegar in my machine for my whites without having to use conditioner. They always come up soft and the smell is very faint, but it goes after drying, whether I use my drier or an airer and I only use a small amount each time.

The only other things I have used in my machine are - Ecover bleach, soda crystals and soda crystal liquid. Other than that I use my washballs, which are brilliant. All of them do wonderful jobs at getting my clothing clean. I sometimes come across a very stubborn stain, but a soak in soda crystals does the job. Ecover bleach is brilliant for using with either the washballs or normal washing powder and liquid.

The washballs I found on a webiste called www.spiritofnature.co.uk or you can get them direct from www.ecowashball.co.uk. They cost £20 for 2 balls already ready to use, 3 refill bags and a stain stick. The refills cost about £4 for 4 bags direct from the site. Each refill/ball does about 100 washes, which means you are paying £20 for 500 washes and £4 for 400 washes.

Having read Martins book on thrifty living I went and bought my bottle of white vinegar (and a squirty spray bottle) but now I'm not sure if its the right one .... its called distilled malt vinegar and its clear ... they didn't have any others that weren't brown so I thought it must be the right one, but it smells like chip vinegar and I'm thinking if |I start cleaning the flat with it the whole place will stink  :D
Can someone enlighten me please before I get going!!

That's the one you want...doesn't leave a smell. Oriental supermarkets often have 5 litre containers for much less that you pay by buying in small bottles...I keep a small bottle in each bathroom which means that I always have some at hand.

    Good cleaning!

Yes, its the right stuff as meanmarie says.

I was very surprised when I first used it as fabric conditioner in my wm. works a treat and no smell.

astonished to find out that vinegar is a by-product of alcholol.
always thought it was halal as it is a common product in many muslim households,
and i am sure that i have read somewhere that it is advisable to have it in house together with other products such as honey and olive oil etc
    any views on this?
    Nice to save.
  • Try value *vinegar*. It tends to be non-brewed condiment, which is a product of the chemical industry. Chemically, it's the same, but tastes rank on your chips!

Seeing as vinegar doesn't get you drunk I don't see why it is banned (!)

Most food laws are hygene-related (see Leviticus especially) and pre-date modern refridgeration.

The Op asks if it is Halal or Haram, whether the Qu'ran allows it or not.
Of course wine vinegar and cider vinegar are Haram (forbidden)
The 'non brewed condiment' would be the thing to have. Buy a bottle of vinegar from your local kebab shop because I think they mostly are Halal establishments as they are around here.
