Sorry to hijack this thread but i appear to be having problems with my machine.
Every load i put in comes out dirtier than it went in. Half of the washing comes out with black circular stains on them, looks very similar to mould.
I put the machine on after every wash just on a rinse, but is this what this vinegar idea is all about?0 -
No problem on the hijacking front lisa!
Well I read on here that you should "wash out" your washing machine once a month using white (distilled) vinegar, by putting 1 cupful in the powder compartment in your washer and running the machine empty on a hot wash.
Apparently it helps to keep the machine free of limescale.
I think vinegar is anti-mould anyway (although I could be wrong) but might be worth a try running some through your machine? Apparently you can use brown malt vinegar to clean the machine if this is all you have in the cupboard.
Let us know how you get on!

Hi Claire,
Now that you're question has been answered I've merged your thread with the main Vinegar thread.

I've followed to the letter all the advice about using vinegar as fabric softener. But my laundry smells of vinegar, despite adding essential oil.
Is this just something I need to get used to or am I doing something wrong?
TIA

After having found this website while looking for places to buy Borax, white vinegar etc, I then noticed the link in Bindweed's message - www.thesoapkitchen.co.uk.
So I went looking......
The vinegar is a tad expensive, but the borax and bicarb don't look too bad. The borax is £1.60 for 500g and the cheapest I have seen it for is £1.23 for 300g (on-line). I haven't found any local yet, but I'm still looking. The bicarb is only 95p for 500g, now that seems really cheap to me - unless there is someplace that sells it cheaper than that! But normally it costs about £1.25 for 300g (on-line).
My husband gets the bicarb, soda crystals and the vinegar from our local ASDA and liquid soda crystals from Instore. Bicarb he gets from the cookery section in the little tubs - 37p for 200g. The vinegar is in glass bottles - 47p for 568mls (distilled). The soda crystals he gets for 51p for a 1kg bag and the liquid stuff for about 99p.
I hope this helps0 -

Apologies for quoting myself, but I'm REALLY keen to drop fabric conditioner in favour of vinegar if I can find a way to lose the vinegary whiff...
Thanks, guys.

How much are you using?
I've used distilled white vinegar twice now as a fabric conditioner, both times on sheets. The amount I've used has been approximately the same amount as concentrated Comfort for a normal wash load, i.e. about 35ml. There has been a faint vinegary smell which has disappeared once the sheets are dry. Have yet to try it on clothes but must use up my stock of Comfort first!0
