I've had some unauthorised transactions in Canada  The bank did call to say that they had stopped them but 2 got through totalling £204.00. This was from my Lloyds debit card. God knows how this happened - I'm assuming my card was cloned? Anyway, now waiting to complete some forms to get my money back.

Garage fraud case back to square one
Since the first incidents of fraud were made public in November local residents have revealed how they have had money stolen from their bank accounts from all corners of the globe.

    Story here.

For: Jenny W: Good luck. I presume your card issuer advised you to change your PIN. I bet they didn't mention that a Chip & Signature card was an alternative option?

James... being devil's advocate here, what do you think about Visa's new product, "V Pay"? Described as:
    • V PAY is chip and PIN only.
    • Protects banks from the reputational damage of card fraud
    • it is expected that by 2010 more than one in every four European debit cards will be a V PAY card
    • Simplified acceptance procedure (always chip and PIN)

My guess at his answer starts with a C, ends with a P and has RA in the middle ;)

two years ago I transferred a balance onto a new card
the balance transferred was the same ammount as the cards limit
I never used the card, as it was a transfer to save me money
after 2 months, I received a letter from the card company, telling me that my limit had been exceeded by ju over £2000
I felt really ill when I read the letter:eek:
I contacted them and they said several small cash amounts had been taken out of a cash machine and the figure included a charge for each cash withdrawal
and an added charge for every one of the withdrawals
    ,
because they all took me over my limit
I told them I had never used the card
that I had never ever withdrawn cash from any credit card
that I didn't even know what the pin number was for the card
and I asked them why they had allowed the money to be taken at all when my card was already up to it's limit?
to cut the rest of a long story short
they insisted I must have had the money
I refused to pay it and I now have a non payment of the money showing on my credit file, which will be there for another 4 years and has totally ruined my credit rating!

The first thing that hits me is complete LIABILITY SHIFT for fraud - on to the cardhodler. maytaurus posting #207 is the perfect example of PINing the blame onto the cardholder.

The second - Chip & Pin only - how are Chip & Signature Card hodlers (DDA compliance?) catered for?

Thirdly - would it be safer to carry this sort of card? Target PIN, Target Card, Target Cardholder? Use at any ATM or point-of-sale without ever being challenged.

For mytaurus: Try this link, (click here) you may get some help.

Posting #207 is the best reason you could ever have for NOT using a PIN with your credit card.

Get yourself Chip & Signature credit cards, before you're stung.

thanks James, that's interesting. Leatherhead is not too far from me.

re my replacement card - no they didn't advise changing my pin. I assumed that I wouldn't need to as my replacement card has a different card number

I've just spent some time reading this thread and hadn't realised that you don't always get your money refunded for fraudulant transactions?

I'm now worried that I wont get my £200 back taken from my visa debit card (illegal transactions in Canada) :(

Anyone know where I would stand? I was on holiday in Canada back in February but didn't use any of my cards. Cards were with me all the time so there is no way they were taken or could it just be a coincidence the they were used in Canada?

I received a statement for a dormant Intelligent Finance visa card last week and there were two transactions on there to 'thetrainline.com' both for £62, one day apart.

I'd not used the card for at least 6 months and all that time it was in a safe at home.

So I called and queried the transactions to be told they'd already flagged them as fraudulent and they'd stopped my account the day before.

Full refund given there and then. Told that new card etc. would arrive in 7-10 days.

New card arrived this morning, 1st class unregistered post. Card was active. Also arriving by 1st class unregistered post, albeit in a seperate envelope, was the PIN

Looks like I'll be closing that account then.

laughable isn't it? We try and be careful as customers but what's the point if the bank's don't bother
