Why would HSBC have rejected it for the 24th last night when they couldnt know that it wouldnt arrive maybe today?
Because they have to say yes or no, not wait and see. If they say yes, they put the money on hold so it can't go away.

There's probably no compelling reason why they couldn't wait until this evening before saying yes or no. But banks are banks.

Are you sure you don't mean in place by tonight?

Sorry but where Ive seen future transactions going out the next day from my HSBC account then Ive always tried to make sure the money was there the night before as they usually debit it in the early hours. Ive never been caught short doing it that way.
Presumably these future transactions are debited from your available balance. Does it go negative beyond your unarranged overdraft limit? If so, what happens if you don't put the money in?

That is what I presumed would happen, and you'd end up with a big fat penalty to pay. If it does happen to me, Ill be after Tesco to pay for sure!!

And if the DD is just refused by HSBC and I miss my prized high interest Newky savings account, Ill be even more on the warpath with Tesco.

I am very surprised that this scandalous story hasn't been picked up by the mainstream newspapers.

Unless someone knows better? I would really like to know.

I just received an email from Philip Clarke (CEO) - philip dot clarke @ uk dot tesco dot com well not him exactly, his executive response team.
It was an apology and an attached complaint form - so no help there then.
My complaint will take the form of leaving as soon as I can.

I notice that somebody from Tesco has the audacity to say "It's not a crisis." It is a crisis for anyone who urgently needs to get at their money, with serious repurcussions if they cannot. The arrogance and complacency continues to be staggering.

I have never tried it so I would have thought if my arranged overdraft does not cover the outgoing payment then yes it would be rejected.

Like now it is showing on pending transactions that NBS will be taking the funds from my HSBC current account tomorrow, at the moment my funds are in my HSBC Flexi Account and later on I will transfer them from the Flexi savings account to my current account for it to be taken by NBS tomorrow. Ive always tried to make sure the funds are there before midnight, so the next day it is there to be debited. Touch wood its always worked for me by doing it like that.

  • My update - the wait to get through was *only* 30 minutes - better than yesterday's abortive calls, and the woman who helped me was great though she was clearly under strain. Arranged a same day payment (not sure if it's appeared yet) and said she had updated my mobile number and deleted long-defunct landline. Though, alas, when I tried to get online via Firefox it WAS still showing that defunct landline as my mobile.

I did mention compensation for phone calls/time etc and she said she'd get a complaint logged. Still a nightmare but her approach softened the blow slightly...
