  • My Mum used to add half an onion to the milk when poaching the fish.

Cook in the microwave, serve with mash and peas with a knob of butter.

my OH likes it poached in milk and served with lovely fresh brown bread and real butter. he thinks it doesn't need anything else on the plate! Though I am partial to green beans with it.

Favourite dinner as a kid with thickly buttered plain bread!

Wouldn't have it with anything else either :)

This was one of dads favourite suppers. smoked haddock was so expensive us kids didn't even get a taste! mum didn't like it, so any smoked haddock was for 'dads supper'. what mum didn't know was that dad would sneak us a few forkfuls!
Mum was of the opinion that as dad was the 'breadwinner' he should get the 'lions share' and the best. Dad tended toward the share and share alike school.
I still think of smoked haddock as being a 'luxury food'! and think three times before buying any!

I would always feed my husband first and the kids next if we werent able to feed everyone the same. The man of the house works hard, and the children still have all their growing to do. Whereas I could have anything. In fact, if we have steak, my daughter usually ends up scoffing hers, then having some of mine and then her veg -I don't know where she puts it!

Of course, I can't imagine it coming down to that - food is as cheap now and it's ever been, or cheaper!

My granta was a miner and my granny always made sure he had the best... that he always insisted the kids should have instead of him. My dads mum, however, sent my other granta down the pit and sent the kids to bed and say down to a steak - after having fed the family of 8 on 1/2lb of mince over two days. Godawful woman.

I might make fish in milk for tomorrow now

I love smoked haddock chowder and do a version of Jamies, take 20 mins so great for after work.

1 or 2 frozen smoked haddock fillets (depends how many you are feeding)
3 small new pots per person, sliced in half and then sliced into half moons
1 cup frozen sweetcorn (this is generally enough for 2)
couple of rashers of bacon, chopped
bit of chopped onion - I usually use a couple of spring onions
veg or chick stock - 500ml is usually enough for two
half tsp dried thyme or couple of springs of fresh thyme
    bayleaf - if you have
    splash of cream or milk

fairly relaxed recipe! in a saucepan sweat the onion in a little oil then add the bacon and fry till beginning to crisp, the add the potatoes, sweetcorn, herbs and stock, lay the frozen fillets on top and pop the lid on, cook for 20 mins. Take lid off and turn fish over (it does break up quite a bit) remove the skin and then add cream and give it a stir - and serve! I could happily eat this every day :-)
2019, move forward with positivity! I am the opposite of Eyeore :rotfl:
