Just had an email from Scottish power about my tarriff price rise!

Elec:
First 225kWh 16.453 going up to 20.825 that a stupid rise of 26.5%
Remaining 9.322 going up to 10.467 that’s a rise of 12.3%

Gas:
First 670kWh 5.339 going up to 7.616 that’s a more than stupid rise of 42.6%
Remaining 2.162 going up to 3.477 that an unbelievable and extortionate rise of 60.8%

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I'm on the Online Energy Saver 11 package.

I'm lost for words at this phenominal rise....looks like candles and a wood burner for me... :(

I too am on Energy Saver 11 and received notification of the price rise this morning. I've calculated that my annual energy bill is to rise from £105 per month to £155. Gas up 60% !!

My reflex action was to reach for the phone to let off some steam but, apart from Scottish Power's estimated wait-time to speak to someone being an hour, I imagine that their 'Customer Service Advisers' are probably reeling from the abuse currently being hurled.

I'll be interested to see the sort of increase that other forum members report - if only because it might help me get my head round the reported average 19% increase. There must be quite a few people enjoying a very low increase for this to be the case.
  • Just received an email from Scottish Power with my price increases, equally shocking. Headline increase was for 19% which sounded bad enough!

    Elec:
    First 225kWh 17.335going up to 23.725 37%
    Remaining 8.446going up to 11.266 33%

    Gas:
    First 670kWh 4.835 going up to 7.541 56%
    Remaining 2.630 going up to 3.457 31%

I don't think we use more than the first allowances so we are looking at 37% increase in electricity and whopping 56% increase in gas.

How the hell is this acceptable!!?? I'm fuming. Interesting to see that the increased rates are all different depending on the plans.

I'm on the Online Energy Saver 10 package.

Also tried phoning as need to find out how this can be justified and also if I'm contracted into current plan and for how long. Need to get moving asap but can't find out if I can!

Record1976 - my e-mail notification had this small print at the bottom "If you notify us that you wish to cancel your agreement before 1st August 2011 and we receive a request for your supply from another supplier within 15 working days, we will not apply the price increase or the cancellation fee for your product."
  • oh but the charge is also called an early exit fee - which can still be applied (apparantly)

I wonder if that means that you could tell them you are switching on the 31st July and they won't apply the price increase until your switch has gone through?

Better to wait a few weeks to see what other energy providers do before switching

I also received a tariff price increases email.

I have been on their Online Energy Saver 10 Dual Fuel package since September 2010. Coincidently they increased the tariffs in that package two months later, and now their latest price rises.

In my case the nett of Vat prices are as follows [ Why they express domestics tariffs as nett of Vat is beyond me, as I cannot get out of paying it]

    Anyway no matter:
    Electricity:
    First 225kWh used each quarter......current 16.187 new 22.104 that's a 36.55% increase
    All/Day remaining kWh...................current 6.171 new 10.348 that's a 67.69% increase

    Gas:
    First 670kWh used each quarter....current 5.106p new 7.419p that's a 45.30% increase
    All/Day remaining kWh.................current 2.641p new 3.381p that's a 28.02% increase

Now being a spreadsheet Geek [I have monthly consumption statistics going back six years at this house]

I can state my energy mix, for the rolling 365 day period, ending Wednesday 15th June 2011, as 5404 Kwh Electric and 10222 Kwh Gas energy consumed in that period. And on those figures it means my next total energy bill will increase by 51.30%.

But if you just use the actual tariff price differences as outlined above it means average electric bills will rise by 56.98%
and gas by 35.06% and on the above consumption figures, using the stated tariff figure increases as expressed in the email. That's a 49.30% extra on an average bill. Of course dependent on which deal you are on means people on here are reporting different percentage increases,

Anyway Wednesday I contacted SP by email not wishing to wait nearly three hours for a call back, I also contacted the BBC as they peddled the lie Scottish Power energy is going up circa 10% electric and 15% gas. Well come to day nothing ziltch not interested. So I've email my MP to ask why the public are being mislead in relation to the real cost implications of these tariff increases. He replied he is writing to Scottish Power, so told me not to hold my breath....Hello!

So I have since sent him a more "focused" email, part quote below:

"I'm utterly Gobsmacked that nobody but nobody, in the government, the opposition, the so called investigative media, so called economic forecasters, have not run the Scottish Power figures through a simple spread sheet. How the BBC did not see my correspondence as being of Public Interest is beyond me, yet another Tax Payer funded organisation, not fit for purpose

Before I could go public with these facts, I first needed to get clarification that the price increases sent out to me were not in fact an error. Well today I manage to contact Scottish Power by phone, and they confirmed those figures were indeed correct.

They first tried to stonewall me by saying the price increases have been passed by OFGEM, and their wording in the press release was correct.

I said I'm not interested what wool you have apparently pull over some civil servants eyes. What I'm saying is Scottish Power and every news media outlet, every MP on Question Time that regurgitates your figures that Electricity prices will increase by 10% and Gas prises by 19% is MISS LEADING THE PUBLIC. I said if you were to take a straw poll of every Scottish Power customer, they would believe their energy bills were set to raise by those figures.

I then asked him, using my annual energy consumption figures of 5404 Kwh of Electricity, and 10222 Kwh of Gas. To work out the actual percentage price increase of those two energy components as reflected in my total bill.

After much pressing of buttons he came back with figures of 27% increase in electric and 35% increase in gas. THE LIE IS OUT! But hang on we are again taking his figures at face value. And again even that is a projection far from the truth."

I'm still awaiting a reply to that one, but to be fair it was sent at lunch time.

I also find it astonishing that a Scottish Power customer services person having the same figures to hand as myself in regard to consumption. Comes up with energy cost increases to my account of 27% electric and 35% gas. When the correct energy cost increases are in fact 60%+ and 35%+

I fear you're in for a long wait and a lot of fluff in response to your very reasonable complaint. But good luck to you and congratulations for taking on these rogues (and in that, I very much include our supine media, who have allowed SP to get away with this supreme example of spinning!).

Interested to know the answer to the above. What will happen if the request from the new supplier takes more than 15 working days? Will the charge be applied? Thanks

I have just spoken to SP after receiving an e-mail regarding prices increases. I am currently on online energy saver 10. The price increase actually removes the previous large discount of on OES10 and just provides a small discount of 1 or 2 per cent compared to the standard tariff - hence the very large increases.
SP informed me that I now have 14 days to inform them if I wish to cancel. After this they must me contacted by by new energy company within 15 days. My tariff will not then be increased. I will simply move to the new provider when the handover between the 2 companies is completed.
I have also done a comparison on moneysupermarket (following the MSE link) and SP have found 2 new tariffs, which effectively give back the OES10 discount. They are OES14 and a brand new tariff "Scottish Power Direct".
SP also confirmed that should the price of these rise any time during the "lock-in" period when cancellation fees apply, then I would be able to cancel without any cancellation/early exit fee.
So, it seems not all is doom and gloom - as is often the case you just need work out how to play system
