  • i do meal plan and batch cook for convenience and cheapness, while still getting something homecooked. But I do miss spontaneous meals, I really dont have time at the moment - unless its a weekend when we go mad.

We shop in aldi too, and arehaving squid tonight. Should be fun. I can say they are OOd.

Kow what you mean about the heating. Ive an open fire and I have put it in today as its chilly, and it will dry the laundry....
    Trying to shift that debt!
  • I've edited the sage and apple sauce recipe above to include instructions.

Put my boots on today

A lovely thing happened in the supermarket, I had spotted some cornish blue cheese reduced on the deli counter and treated myself to a wee chunk. The code wouldn't work on the till and the superviser told the cashier just to give it to me, wish I had chosen a bigger bit :rotfl:

  • Hello, how the week has flown. What has been occurring? not a lot money wise this week. I do have to report though that I am exceedingly glad I got the cheese free last week as it was the most unflavoursome piece of blue cheese I have ever come across. It tasted just like Edam! Was nearly a disaster as I was planning on using it on a potato, rosemary and blue cheese pizza (out of Hughs new book, absolutely gorgeous!) but fortunately found some more tasty stuff in the fridge I could use!

Talking of food I also learned a very good lesson on 'false economy' this last week. There is no such thing as a substitute for a Jacobs Cream Cracker. On purchasing crackers last week I was confronted by Jacobs for 99p or shops own for 56p and went for the cheaper. Well it was 56p in the bin basically, some things in life are worth paying a little extra for.

Got all my apple sauces made yesterday and today so that's done. Next week I'm making Mango chutney I think, got plenty jars left to fill :rotfl:

I did get a nice surprise when a new tax credit award arrived the other day with the missing 3 days added on it so no idea who messed that one up :D

And I won £5 of Merchant Gourmet Vouchers by commenting on thier FB page so that was nice too. And thats about it, off to check out what everyone else has been up to .....

  • Sorry for delay Starnac, have had severely limited access to my laptop this weekend! Kids!:rotfl:

    • 2 red onions peeled and chopped
    • 4 clovs garlic peeled and sliced
    • 1 cinnamon stick
    • 750 ml cider vinegar
    • 3 large cooking apples peeled, cored and sliced
    • 1 kg light brown soft suar
    • 15 cardamom pods
    • 3⁄4 tsp ground cloves
    • 1⁄2 tsp nigella seeds
    • 1⁄2 tsp fenugreek
    • 1⁄2 tsp chilli flakes
    • 8 large under ripe mangoes
Put all the spices (except cinnamon) in a large pan and toast over a low heat. Add the onions, garlic, cinnamon stick and vinegar and simmer for 10 mins. While onions are softening peel and stone the mangoes and cut the flesh into 1cm lengths, remove the flesh from stone too. Add to the pan and simmer stirring occasionaly for 15 mins. Add the apples an 500mls water and simmer for 20mins. Adthe sugar and simmer for 1-1 1/2hours. it should be pulpy and think but mango slices still intact. Ladle into warm, sterilised jars and seal.

This recipe says it makes 4 litres though, apparently the author eats it by the bucket load  I'm going to half it.:D

Had a lovely weekend, spent yesterday afternoon foraging for blueberries, downside to that was having to be up early making pancakes for the kids before school. Earned a few points there though I think.
