Hey all
Well, we got up this morning and the weather was not good! I was also a bit worried to say the least, as illness and other things meant that I hadn't done any training for about a month, and when I went for a couple of runs this week it was really difficult  However, I've raised £275 and can't believe everyone's generosity!
It was a bit of a trek to the park and by the time we got there, it was properly p!ssing it down. I was standing there really nervous because I didn't know how I'd get on running in the rain, and I didn't know how I'd get on running three miles when my training hasn't been very consistent (or existent, these past few weeks).
I have to admit I felt quite emotional as well, especially when reading everyone's back signs (you're given a sign for your back saying "I Race For Life for..." - it's tragic that so many people have lost loved ones to cancer, and shocking when I realised that some of the sufferers had only been born in the 1990s.
I knew I wasn't going to be able to run the whole course, but I joined the runners anyway as I considered myself to be more of a runner than a walker. I started my watch when I reached the start line and just let my legs carry me. I think because I didn't know the route, I had nothing to measure myself against (when I'm practising, I think I tell myself I'm tired because I'm approaching certain landmarks) and then after seven minutes realised I'd run 1½km already! I had to slow down to a fast walk at times, though, and at 16 minutes I'd done 3km - over half the course - which I was really pleased with.
I ended up crossing the finish line, feeling very proud of myself, at 37 minutes :T I did not for one second think I would be able to do the race in under 50 minutes, let alone 40!!!
I am now going to carry on running each week, as I need to get fitter (and thinner) and now I know what I can achieve, I want to build on that. A sub-30 minute time should be well feasible in a few weeks!
Good luck to all those yet to run!

Fantastic achievement! Well done! I lost my best friend 5 years ago to cancer and admire anyone that supports the cause. :A
I am training (Ha Ha!!) for the Great North Run in aid of the Stroke Association. My OH (only 53 at the time) had a stroke in November and 'thank God' is now well on the way to making a full recovery within 2-3 years.
A 'running thread' I feel.... unless it's somewhere else already!
K xI'M THE NANNA!!! :cool:0 -

Thanks - and sorry to hear of your loss and your OH's stroke.
Best of luck for the Great North Run - I'd be interested in joining a running thread, too, as I'd quite like to enter some more races inbetween the charity ones - I think part of what kept me going was having other people to pace myself against - just made it a bit more interesting than just running around a park! Also, in the park I feel that I have psychological milestones that I reach and tell myself I'm tired and need to slow down, but in the unfamiliar surroundings I had nothing to measure myself against (apart from the kilometre markers, and I didn't even see the first one when I went past it)!

Hi all
Has anyone received their keyring for raising more than £125 yet?

I just did my race for life run today also in the heavy rain, I am 46 on Tuesday, not ultra fit or slim LOL but this was my aim at the start of the year to motivate me to get fitter. I was hoping for a time under an hour and I was really happy to do it in my current age (45 mins).
I have raised in excess of £150 plus I have a few pledges that haven't hit my just giving page yet and I also co-opted my sister and daughter into the team so we have raised over £500 between us.
I was and am very proud of myself, I wasn't exhausted and I would have been quicker but the going was very wet and muddy and the paths were narrow and mossy so running was not an option in some areas, there were over 1500 people running in the event.
I plan to add to my exercise routine with some running to ensure I do even better time next year and I might even go for a longer event for charity now I have the bug.0 -
