on the subject of moses baskets and sheet. If you are planning to use grobags/sleppimg bags instead, how many do you need? It's a bit of a minefield when you start to think about sizes, togs etc.

I was under the impression that grobags were for 6 months+? I've no idea where I got that piece of information from though so it could easily be wrong lol

I also read that you shouldn't use them under 6 months hence I haven't bought any yet. I think it's because their head is so small they can wriggle down into them & suffocate?

I'm very jealous of the lovely silver-cross prams Mimi and Flower! With DD i had a nissan micra, so no way would one of those have fitted in it, so i got a Graco travel system pram. Which I'll be reusing (very MSE), even though i now have a Renault Scenic.

I never heard about the superstition re: prams in the house. TBH i would have ignored it anyway, as I'd prefer to be prepared!
Also, what am I supposed to be doing with my gym ball? I sit on it lots but just because it's comfortable. How can I encourage baby to vacate?

Just bounce gentle on it with hips apart to help the baby engage and get nice and low. I use mine a lot now that baby is head down.

I have a swaddling wrap and a baby sleeping bag. Not used the swaddling thing before but the sleeping bag will be to bulky for the moses basket i think. I have 2 fitted and 2 flat sheets for the basket, but pillowcases are a great idea Twinkle and Hayley! I'll use the sleeping bag in the cot. It worked wonders getting DD to sleep from 6 weeks onwards. (Mine is non branded but I was never worried about DD slipping down and getting suffocated. think it's too neat fitting under the arms for that.) She was born in January so it kept her nice and warm and stopped her kicking too much.

I was looking at ebony and sugared almonds - i really wanted the lighter one, had a dark blue one with DD and it annoyed me as people assumed she was a boy (wasnt as dark as marina so am sure you will be fine!) but figured a light one isnt best choice lol

Well we know we are having a boy, but I think if we didnt now we would of gone for the ebony one as your right people do automatically associate anything blue with baby being a boy!
Is it sad that I got very excited when our pram arrived and wanted to set it all up? :o

There are quite a few 0-6 months sleep bag out there so it should be fine. I've read that parents tend to swaddle for the first few weeks then use the sleeping bags.
LauraLou where did you get your bags from? I think I'll have to get a 2.5tog as I'm having an Oct baby. Or baby 2 of them for when one is in the wash.

The pram is the one thing we have splashed out on. I wanted that one from day one but there was no way we could afford it, then OHs parents said they wanted to contribute some money to the pram so they paid half and we paid half - we are very lucky :)

Everything else has been bought either second hand or in the sales as we are very conscious that our income isnt huge and we are still trying to pay off our debts.

I got them from mothercare. I don't think i will use mine straight after baby is born as skint_catt said i would be scared they could slip down and suffocate.

Hello hope everybody is keeping well. Ihave not been on mse since just after my daughter was born due to a few unfortunate complications with recovery But wanted to post about our experience of various brands of baby bottle which may save somebody a lot of stress and upset after their baby is born so this thread seemed the best place to put it. We had bought the tommee tip pee closer to nature bottles for our baby thinking that they would be a good choice as they are such a popular brand. We had a terrible time with them as they seemed to cause her terrible colic......except being an idiot I had no idea that bottles could cause this and plodded on with using them for 2 weeks and dealing with her constant suffering before seeking professional advice. One of the first questions I was asked was which type of feeding bottle I was using and was told that they were most probably the problem as they had seen lots of babies in a similar situation who improved markedly once they were fed from different bottles. I went straight to our local mother care and bought someMaM ultivent bottles and within 24 hours the colic had all but disapeared. I did a search on this and sadly it seems to be quite a common problem although I am sure that a lot of babies will be fed using them quite successfully too. I hope that what I have said is useful to some of you

I've heard not to use them until they are bigger for the same reason Laura, we're not going to use them until nipper is in the cot, although I think it's something like 8lb is the minimum safe weight so long as their head doesn't fit through the gap.

We've got one from Matalan, one from Tesco http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.207-6848.aspx (Only £6.30 with the code on the page, 2.5 tog, 0-6months) and one from Asda. Going to see which ones wear best for buying the next size up.

As for togs, I think it's very dependant on your house and how you heat it. We're playing it by ear because we have had a new boiler fitted since last winter so don't know how warm it'll be, have got 1 tog and 2.5 tog, but have other expecting friends who will make use of them if we don't.

ETA - http://fsid.org.uk/document.doc?id=24 page 6 has advice on bedding, it doesn't say anything about minimum weights or ages for sleeping bags. It's worth a read IMO, it's mainly common sense but reassuring at the same time.
    Bump due 22nd September

  • I sleep on whichever side faces away from OH, I can't sleep if I am breathing in someone else's expelled breath. So if OH rolls over so do I. I think it is 'preferable' for you to be on your left, but at the end of the day, before this research was carried out millions of women the world over managed to successfully have healthy babies.

Haha me too. I get annoyed if I'm comfy too and OH turns over in the middle of the night so he's facing me. I either tell him to roll over (obedient in his sleep lol) or resort to rolling him over myself. I have also been known to dish out the odd elbow which strangely makes him roll over, rather than wake up and hit me back as I would if he did that to me :rotfl:
