To be fair to butlins it does sound like they are doing their best to help control the spread but ultimately it's a virus - something they have little control over.

With regards to them giving refunds to people who have decided to leave I think they're being quite fair. After all don't most people buy travel insurance to cover situations like these. Holidaying in the UK is no different to holidaying abroad (other than the weather :)). The exception to this in my eyes is where Butlins have asked someone to leave.

It is horrible though for all the people that are ill and I can completely understand the concern of those who are due to be holidaying at Butlins.

  • I am due to go to the adult weekend also this Friday, I really don't know what to do, I've just been ill with a stomach bug, I don't really want another? How bad is it - is it getting worse do you think?

My dad has contacted them the last 2 days, and today they say that they have had the environmental health in to clean the site and they have declared it fit to stay open.

    What to believe?!!

Nothing to do with Butlins I am afraid but interested in the different blood groups affecting resistance.

A couple of years ago the nanovirus was going round. My sons got it, 48 hrs break inbetween one getting and the other one starting being ill (I think). Both were very very sick. So was a busy time for Mum lol. I didn't seem to get it.., then suddenly felt like death. Wasn't sick, but really did feel very bad indeed, aching, the lot, extreme nausea etc. I sat, lock jawed determined i wasn't going to be sick cause I couldn't afford to be, and managed to get someone to 'babysit' for me cause i felt so ill. Went to bed, slept like a log and felt ill for two days but was able to function thank god.

Was really wierd I felt so ill but wasn't ill if u know what i mean tho lol. I do tend to be a bit resistant to 'stomach bugs'. I am A+ so while its a pain being rhesus positive, I wonder if that affected how I responded to the bug. I don't have a doubt I had it.

I don't think you mean nano virus, not unless you are a plant or in a Star Wars film. If you mean norovirus then it has more to do with your histo blood group than rhesus.

I think it is unfair to blame Butlins for passing the virus around. So many people in close proximity of each other - of course it is going to spread around, it is like school. They are asking people to stay in their rooms to minimise the risk and they are cleaning everything stringently so that is fair enough, what more do people want them to do?

My husband got this when he was at DLP a few years back, thankfully we never got it from him, however, it could happen anywhere.

I think Butlins are being generous in saying you can go elsewhere or have a partial refund. You could get this virilant Virus wherever you go - be it school, the office, the train, cinema, hospital or the doctors. Because it comes on so quickly, you could have it before you even realise anyway.

I did laugh at nano virus though, LOL.

Of course they are. Scumbags. Any opportunity. It's a virus. They have not deliberately poisoned people - whenever you are around lots of other people there is always a risk that you are going to catch something from other people.
  • I have contacted Butlins several times since Monday, since a friend, who is trusted informed me if the outbreak during their stay as she knew we were booked in for a Friday 25th June break. She said there was large scale vomiting everywhere, in the toilets, dining room etc. She said it was on a very large scale. Butlins told me health and safety had declared the resort safe and everyone who had it had left. Yet as new people come in, more people are becoming ill. I visit bognor for 3 adult weekends a year and have another two booked. I'm gutted I had to pull out but butlins transferred my payment onto a later booking so I wasn't financially out of pocket. My advice would be to get your information from more than one source then make an informed decision. I'm a single mum who really lives these breaks away but could not risk becoming ill. Butlins supported my decision and transferred monies without financial penalty. So I cannot complain about my personal customer service. I feel the original families there and those unaware of the outbreak should be supported and compensated for loss and distress. However, since it became public knowledge within the media and people are still going then they cannot then complain as they were offerred rebooking/transfer but took the risk anyway. I didn't want to cancel, I desperately need a break but I don't want to get ill as there is no one else to care for me or my kids if I do.
