Yeah I don't count depreciation. This particular car was bought for £4k and will be run until it totally breaks, so the depreciation is £4k but over how long? Can't tell. I don't see why it shouldn't last 10-15 years, guess it depends when they stop making parts for it.Looks like you forgot one of the largest cost of car ownership, depreciation
Looking on the whatcar.com website they state an estimated cost to run a car for the first 3 years including fuel, servicing, depreciation and tax (but not insurance) and the cheapest new small car costs 26p a mile. Hence 1000 miles a month equals £260+ per month. Most family cars are more than 40p a mile.
Edit: Looking at cars for sale, it seems to have lost £1000 so far, or £41 a month. That takes the monthly cost up to £180, still cheaper than public transport when you factor in trips to see family. A return train ticket to MIL's house is £70 per person!0 -

However my point is that we have in place a very simple way in which we can weed out poor drivers in the upper age groups, yet we consistently fail to do so.......
Good idea but the problem with retesting is that I could drive like an angel when on my test/retest and like an idiot the rest of the time.
Perhaps a better solution would be to have every car fitted with a video camera with the resulting recordings published online for peer review, say somewhere like youtube.
If 20 or 50 viewers tick an “idiot” box then the recording gets viewed by a driving examiner, if he votes “idiot” as well you get a letter from Swansea together with an SAE to return your licence.0 -

A deliberate idiot is better than an accidental one, it's those who drive badly and are totally unaware or too arrogant to accept it, which are the biggest problem.
I don't mind someone doing 90 down a country lane, at least they know they're doing it. But when dozy buggar always takes the left hand lane to go right (or U turn) at a traffic island, or runs straight through a pedestrian crossing, because he/she thinks they're always right, that behaviour is far more difficult to predict and far more dangerous.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Talking of candid camera... any signs of a new video from the Strider?
There is a great one which stops at 31 seconds just before Strider three abreast...........
(It's a bit of what happened next):-
Did Strider hit the cyclist?
Did Strider hit the car?
Did the cyclist end up in the ditch?
Did the cyclist need new pants?
Think the cyclist was cycling too slowly for Strider's liking. Strider certainly decided he wasn't a potential hazard and just carried out without even thinking about slowing down.
Ignore the poor guy in the Focus at the start he has probably had the misfortune to have Strider on his tail pipe before.

I passed the cyclist safely you tw4t, my wheels are well over that white line and there was plenty of room. This is why I make the point about the camera mounting versus the centre of the video, I suggest you find something more valid to pick on..... Because quite frankly im very much pro-cycling, they're far better road users than most drivers. Period.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Did you stop then and allow the oncoming vehicle to pass?
Why don't you post that footage? The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0
